Globes, Reference Lines, Latitude, and Hemispheres Review

Good to see you again. In the last round, you reviewed the five themes of geography and learned that location answers “Where is it?” This round builds directly on that idea: latitude and longitude give absolute location, while the Equator and Prime Meridian organize Earth into hemispheres.

For tomorrow’s test, keep one big contrast in mind: latitude tells north or south; longitude tells east or west. You will also lock in the answers for a globe, the Equator, the Prime Meridian, Greenwich, and hemisphere.


Build the globe picture first

A globe is a three-dimensional, spherical model of Earth. Because it is round, it shows the shapes and positions of continents and oceans more realistically than a flat world map, which must stretch or distort some areas.

Use the diagram to notice two different families of imaginary lines:

The words parallels and meridians are test clues:

  • Lines that run parallel to the Equator are LATITUDE lines.
  • Longitude lines are MERIDIANS. They meet at the North and South Poles.
  • The Equator is at latitude.
  • The Prime Meridian is at longitude.

The two reference lines and four hemispheres

The Equator is an imaginary line around the middle of Earth. It divides the planet into the:

  • Northern Hemisphere
  • Southern Hemisphere

The Prime Meridian is an imaginary line of longitude that passes through Greenwich, England. In standard school geography, it divides Earth into the:

  • Eastern Hemisphere
  • Western Hemisphere

A hemisphere is simply one half of a globe. “Hemi” means half, and “sphere” refers to the round Earth.

For your test, the United States is in the Northern and Western Hemispheres. The expected answer is based on the United States’ usual position on a classroom world map.

On the page, begin with the first paragraph under the title. Read the latitude explanation, focusing on why latitude lines are called parallels and how the Equator divides Earth. Then read the next paragraph, beginning “Longitude lines, called meridians.” Read the longitude explanation, and notice that the Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, England.
