2. Programming the Bassline: The Engine of the Groove
In Streets of Rage, the bassline is rarely just a harmonic foundation; it is the primary rhythmic engine. Koshiro was heavily influenced by the club sounds of his time and made a conscious effort to replicate them using the Genesis hardware.

A. Rhythmic Programming (Syncopation):
Koshiro programmed his basslines to heavily feature notes on the upbeats and weak 16th notes, directly applying the principle of syncopation.
Let's look at the iconic bassline from "Go Straight". The kick drum provides the steady four-on-the-floor pulse on the downbeats. The bassline dances around it.

Notice how no bass notes land on the strong downbeats (1, 2, 3, 4). They fall exclusively on the upbeats (&) and the last 16th-note (a) of the third beat, creating a classic, driving house groove that pulls the listener forward. The notes are also programmed to be staccato (very short), which is achieved with the fast decay and release envelope settings we analyzed in the last lesson. This keeps the rhythm tight and punchy.
B. Emulating TB-303 "Accent" and "Slide":
The TB-303 sequencer had two signature features that Koshiro cleverly mimicked:
- Accent: This made certain notes louder, brighter, and more resonant. Koshiro could achieve this in his custom MML (Music Macro Language) environment by programming velocity differences. A higher velocity on a specific note could be programmed to increase the Total Level (TL) of the modulator operators for that note only, creating a momentary burst of harmonics and volume—the FM equivalent of an accent.
- Slide: This created a smooth portamento, or glide, between notes. The YM2612 has no native slide function. However, Koshiro's programming background allowed him to overcome this. He could program extremely rapid, fine-grained pitch bends between notes to simulate a smooth glide, a level of control that was not available in more basic music drivers.

Rather than long, flowing melodies, many Streets of Rage tracks use short, percussive synth stabs as the main hook. Think of "Fighting in the Street," which we analyzed last lesson. The lead is not a melody in the traditional sense, but a rhythmic pattern played with a noisy, aggressive patch. This technique is highly effective:
- Rhythmically: It adds another layer of syncopation, often playing a call-and-response with the bassline.
- Sonically: The sharp, percussive nature of the sound cuts through the mix without needing to be sustained.
- Technically: Short notes use up channel time very efficiently.
2. Arpeggiation:
Playing a full three- or four-note chord would instantly consume half of the available FM channels. A common and musically effective workaround in the 90s was arpeggiation—playing the notes of a chord in a rapid sequence on a single channel. This technique:
- Saves Polyphony: A three-note chord that would take three channels can be represented on one.
- Creates Rhythmic Energy: A fast-moving sequence of notes adds a sense of motion and excitement that a static, sustained chord lacks.
- Emulates Classic Synths: Many classic synthesizers and sequencers of the era had built-in arpeggiators, so using this technique further grounded Koshiro's music in the authentic sound of the time. The iconic synth line in the "Player Select" screen is a perfect example of a simple, effective arpeggio.
