Which sounds more like a modern drum machine? Timbre: How would you describe the character of the main synth sounds? Does one feel 'grittier' or more 'metallic' than the other? Density: Which track feels more layered and rhythmically complex?
You likely noticed a clear escalation. The SoR2 track is faster, the drums hit harder and sound more realistic (a direct result of better samples), and the synth textures are more aggressive and complex. This isn't just a refinement; it's a re-energizing of the entire sonic palette.
3. Deconstructing the Leap Forward

- The Kick & Snare: The iconic, punchy kick drum and sharp snare of tracks like "Go Straight" are samples, likely from popular drum machines of the era like the Roland TR-909, which was foundational to techno. This gave the rhythm section a weight and power that was simply not possible with the SoR1 toolset.
- Vocal Stabs: The "Go! Go!" and other vocal samples sprinkled throughout the soundtrack were another direct import from club culture, made possible by the expanded memory.
B. Synthesis: Increased Aggression and Complexity
While the percussion became more sample-based, the melodic and harmonic content was still driven by the YM2612. Here, the evolution was in the programming.
