Today, we will build directly on that foundation. Our goal is to reconstruct a philosopher's argument in standard form from a prose passage. This involves taking the premises and conclusion you've identified and organizing them into a clear, numbered list that reveals the argument's logical skeleton. Mastering this skill is essential for the rigorous, text-driven analysis you want to pursue. It transforms a dense paragraph into a precise structure that we can then systematically evaluate.
What is Standard Form?
First, let's get a clear picture of what "standard form" means. In logic and philosophy, it's simply a conventional way of presenting an argument to make its structure as clear as possible.
An argument in standard form looks like this:
- (Premise 1)
- (Premise 2)
- ... (and so on for all premises)
- (Conclusion)
The premises are listed first, each numbered. A line separates the premises from the conclusion, which is the final numbered statement.

As you saw, the process filters out conversational filler and presents only the core logical claims. This clarity is the main reason we use standard form.
The Principle of Charity: "Steel-Manning" an Argument
Before we dive into the mechanics of reconstruction, we must introduce the most important guiding principle in philosophical dialogue: the Principle of Charity.
When reconstructing an argument, especially one you disagree with, your goal is not to make it look weak. On the contrary, your goal is to make it as strong and persuasive as possible. This practice is sometimes called "steel-manning" an argument, as opposed to the logical fallacy of "straw-manning" (misrepresenting an argument to make it easier to attack).
Why be charitable?
- It promotes truth-seeking: By engaging with the strongest possible version of an argument, you are forced to grapple with the best reasons for a particular view, which is the surest path to discovering the truth.
- It ensures productive debate: If you can show a flaw in the strongest version of an opponent's argument, your critique is far more powerful.
- It's a mark of intellectual integrity: It shows that you are interested in understanding an issue deeply, not just in "winning" a debate.
The following reading explains this principle and introduces a systematic procedure for reconstruction that we will be following.

A Systematic Procedure for Reconstruction
Now, let's turn to the "how-to." The reading you've just begun outlines a detailed, step-by-step method for reconstructing arguments. Given your background as an IT analyst, you can think of this as an algorithm for parsing philosophical reasoning.
Here are the core steps from the resource, which we will explore in detail:
A. Be charitable.
B. Find the conclusion.
C. Find the explicit premises.
D. Add implicit premises.
E. Make charitable revisions in language.
F. Make language match between premises and conclusion.
G. Put the argument into standard form.
H. Add justifications.
I. Make sub-arguments explicit.
Let's break these down into three phases.
Phase 1: Finding the Raw Materials (Steps B & C)
This phase is a review of our last lesson. You start by reading the text to identify the conclusion (the main point) and the explicit premises (the stated reasons). As you learned, this involves looking for indicator words and analyzing the support structure of the passage.
Phase 2: Refining and Strengthening the Argument (Steps D, E, & F)
This is where the real work of reconstruction begins. Philosophers, like all writers, don't always state every single one of their assumptions. Often, an argument as written is technically invalid because a crucial connecting premise is missing.
Adding Implicit Premises (Step D)
An implicit premise is a claim that is not stated but is assumed by the author and is necessary to make the argument logically successful. A charitable reconstruction makes these premises explicit.
Consider this simple argument:
Socrates is a man, so he must be mortal.
In standard form, this would look incomplete:
- Socrates is a man. (Explicit Premise)
- Therefore, Socrates is mortal. (Conclusion)
The conclusion doesn't logically follow from the single premise. To make the argument valid, we must add the implicit premise that the author clearly assumes:
- Socrates is a man. (EP)
- All men are mortal. (IP - Implicit Premise)
- Therefore, Socrates is mortal.
Now the argument is logically complete. Identifying and adding implicit premises is perhaps the most critical step in charitable reconstruction.
Revising and Matching Language (Steps E & F)
To ensure logical precision, we must also clean up the language. This means:
- Replacing vague phrases with clear statements (e.g., "It stands to reason that..." becomes simply the statement itself).
- Ensuring that the terms used in the premises are identical to the terms in the conclusion. If a premise is about a "loving, all-powerful God" the conclusion should also be about a "loving, all-powerful God," not just "God."
Phase 3: Finalizing the Form (Steps G, H, & I)
Once you have all the premises (explicit and implicit) and have clarified the language, you assemble the argument.
- Put into standard form (Step G): Number the premises, draw a line, and state the conclusion.
- Add justifications (Step H): For clarity, it's good practice to note where each line came from. Use
(EP)for explicit premises and(IP)for implicit premises. For conclusions, you note which premises they follow from. - Make sub-arguments explicit (Step I): Complex arguments often use the conclusion of one argument as a premise for another. A full reconstruction shows these intermediate steps.
A Worked Example
Let's see this entire process applied to a more complex argument.
Original Prose:
"The starter must be broken. If the car won't start, then it's either the starter, the alternator, or the battery that's the problem. It won't start. And we've ruled out the alternator since we just put a new one in, and it can't be the battery because it's fully charged.”
Now, let's read the full reconstruction from the McCormick text. Notice how the author identifies implicit premises, rearranges the statements for logical flow, and makes sub-arguments explicit.

Now we will study the rest of the 'Reconstructing Arguments' guide. This will walk you through each step of the procedure with detailed explanations and examples.
Read the sections from 'B. Finding Conclusions' through to the end ('Examples'). Pay special attention to the examples of adding implicit premises (Section D) and making sub-arguments explicit (Section I), particularly the car starter example.
Here is the final reconstruction of the car starter argument from the text.
- If the car won't start, then either the starter is broken, the alternator is broken, or the battery is dead. (EP)
- The car won't start. (EP)

This reconstruction is a perfect model. It is clear, logically valid, and charitably includes the unstated reasons that are part of the original argument's intent.

Now it's your turn. Read the following passage from the philosopher Epicurus and reconstruct his argument in standard form. Follow the procedure: be charitable, find the conclusion and explicit premise, add any necessary implicit premises, and present it clearly with justifications.
"Death is nothing to us. For what has been dissolved has no sensation, and what has no sensation is nothing to us."

Here is one charitable reconstruction of Epicurus's argument:
- Death is the dissolution of the self/body. (IP - This is a reasonable definition of death that Epicurus assumes).
- What has been dissolved has no sensation. (EP)
- Therefore, the dead have no sensation. (from 1, 2)
- What has no sensation is nothing to us. (EP)
- Therefore, death is nothing to us. (from 3, 4)
Analysis of the Reconstruction:
- Conclusion: The conclusion is stated right at the beginning: "Death is nothing to us."
- Explicit Premises: Epicurus gives two explicit reasons: "what has been dissolved has no sensation" and "what has no sensation is nothing to us."
- Implicit Premise & Sub-argument: The argument works better if we make the connection between death and dissolution explicit (Premise 1). This allows us to form a sub-argument that concludes the dead have no sensation (Conclusion 3), which then serves as the perfect subject for the final premise (Premise 4). This makes the logical flow airtight.

You have now learned the complete, foundational process of argument analysis: moving from a complex prose passage to a clear, structured argument in standard form.
