Hylomorphism: Matter and Form in Sensible Substances

Introduction

In our previous lessons, we've assembled the core components of Aristotle's metaphysical framework. We've discussed substance (ousia), the distinction between potentiality (dynamis) and actuality (energeia), and how change (kinēsis) is defined as the actualization of a potentiality. We now understand that things change and have a formal definition for the process of change.

Today, we address a fundamental question that underpins all of this: what is the basic structure of the physical things—the "sensible substances"—that we see changing all around us? The learning outcome for this lesson is to explain Aristotle's doctrine of hylomorphism (matter-form composition) as the structure of sensible substances.

Hylomorphism (from the Greek hylē for matter and morphē for form) is Aristotle's answer. It is the final, crucial piece of his metaphysical toolkit. Understanding it will clarify how a single object can persist through change while becoming something different. This concept is the bedrock upon which the physics of motion is built, and it is these hylomorphic substances whose motion will ultimately require us to posit a First Mover.

1. The Problem with Plato's Forms

2. Hylomorphism: The Matter-Form Composite

Aristotle's solution is hylomorphism: the doctrine that every sensible substance is a composite of two fundamental principles: matter (hylē) and form (morphē).

  • Matter is the "that out of which" something is made. It is the principle of potentiality, the underlying stuff that can receive a form.
  • Form is the "what it is to be" that thing. It is the principle of actuality, the essence, structure, or organizing principle that makes the matter into a specific, determinate substance.

Form vs. Matter

A classic example is a bronze statue of Athena.

  • The matter is the bronze.
  • The form is the shape and structure of Athena that the sculptor imposes on the bronze.

Neither the lump of bronze alone nor the abstract shape of Athena alone is the statue. The statue is the composite of that form in that matter. This applies to natural objects as well: an oak tree is a composite of its woody matter and the form of "oak tree-ness."

3. Hylomorphism and the Nature of Change

The true power of hylomorphism becomes apparent when we connect it back to our previous topic: change. How does this model explain change?

In any change, the hylomorphic framework requires that something persists and something is new.

  • Matter is the principle of persistence. It is the underlying substratum that endures through the change.
  • Form is the principle of novelty. The change consists in the matter losing one form and gaining another.

This is especially important for understanding what Aristotle calls substantial change—when a substance comes into being or ceases to be.

Form vs. Matter

As the article explains, when an acorn ceases to be an acorn and becomes an oak seedling, a substantial change has occurred. This isn't creation from nothing (ex nihilo). Rather, the underlying matter that composed the acorn has persisted but has taken on a new form, the form of an oak.

  • Accidental Change: The substance (form + matter) persists, but gains or loses an accidental property. Example: A man (substance) becomes pale (accident).
  • Substantial Change: The matter persists, but gains a new substantial form. Example: Food (matter + form of food) is eaten and becomes flesh (same underlying matter + new form of flesh).

Hylomorphism thus provides a robust model for how reality can be both stable (matter persists) and dynamic (forms change).

4. The Primacy of Form

If a substance is a compound of matter and form, a natural question arises: are they equal partners? Or is one more fundamental? For Aristotle, the answer is clear: form is primary.

While matter is a necessary condition for a sensible substance, it is indeterminate and potential. It is the form that provides the actuality, the identity, and the unity of the substance. Aristotle argues that matter by itself fails to be a "this something"—a definite, individual thing.
