Potentiality and Actuality: Understanding Change

Introduction

We concluded with Aristotle's seemingly paradoxical definition of change (kinēsis) as the actuality of a potentiality, as such. We established that this isn't a contradiction, but a nuanced description of the process of change itself—the "being-at-work" of a potential that is not yet fully realized.

Today, we will put that definition to work. The learning outcome for this lesson is to apply the potentiality-actuality distinction to explain the nature of change (kinēsis). We will move from the abstract definition to its concrete application, exploring how this single, powerful idea provides a unified framework for understanding every kind of change in the natural world.

1. The Anatomy of Change: A Process, Not a State

To get at the philosophical precision of this, let's turn to a more rigorous source. The key is in Aristotle's specific phrasing: "the actuality of the potential in so far as it is potential."

Aristotle's Natural Philosophy

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy article 'Aristotle's Natural Philosophy' provides a detailed analysis of this definition. It clarifies a crucial point: the 'change' is not the actualization of a separate 'potential for change,' but the incomplete actualization of the potential for the final state.

Please read the final paragraph of Section 2, 'Motion'. It begins 'Within the four domains where genuine change can occur...'. Focus on understanding why change is a 'special kind of actuality'—an incomplete one.

This reading makes a point that is essential for understanding Aristotle's physics. The process of building a house is not the actuality of some abstract "potential-to-be-changed." Rather, it is the incomplete actuality of the materials' potential to be a house.

Let's break this down:

  • The bricks and wood have a potential to be a house.
  • The finished house is the complete actuality of that potential.
  • The process of building is the incomplete actuality of that same potential.

Change, therefore, is the state of being "on the way" to a final actuality. It is a process intrinsically directed toward an end (telos). This is fundamentally different from a modern conception of motion as simply a succession of positions or states. For Aristotle, the end state is metaphysically present during the process as the potential being actualized.

2. The Definition in Action: Types of Change

Aristotle's definition is powerful because of its generality. It applies to any kind of change an object can undergo. He identifies four fundamental types of change, all of which can be explained as the actualization of a specific kind of potentiality.

As you can see, the structure is identical in each case. We identify a subject (water, puppy, ball, acorn) with an inherent potentiality for a different state. The change is simply the name we give to the process of that potentiality being actualized.

3. The Mechanism of Change: Active and Passive Potentialities

So, a thing changes when its potential is actualized. But what triggers this process? A potentiality doesn't actualize itself out of nowhere. This brings us to the mechanism of change.

For any change to occur, there must be an interaction between two corresponding potentialities:

  1. A passive potentiality in the thing being changed (e.g., the water's capacity to be heated).
  2. An active potentiality in the thing causing the change (e.g., the fire's capacity to heat).

This explains how change happens. The process of heating is a single event, but it can be described in two ways: as the fire acting on the water, and as the water being acted upon by the fire. Aristotle's key insight is that this is one and the same process, which he locates in the thing being changed. The "heating" is happening in the water.

This principle is the foundation for the next step in our course: the idea that "whatever is moved is moved by another." A passive potentiality cannot actualize itself; it requires a corresponding active potentiality to initiate and sustain the change.

4. Case Study: Solving Zeno's Arrow Paradox

The robustness of a philosophical definition can be tested by its ability to solve puzzles. Zeno's paradoxes were famous in antiquity for challenging the very possibility of motion. Let's see how Aristotle's framework handles one of the most famous.

Zeno's Arrow Paradox: At any given instant of time, an arrow in flight must occupy a space equal to itself. But if it occupies a space equal to itself, it is at rest. If it is at rest at every instant of its flight, then it can never be in motion.

The error, from an Aristotelian perspective, is to treat a continuous motion as a sum of an infinite number of static "instants" or "rests."

Aristotle's solution is elegant. The flight of the arrow is not a collection of positions. It is a single, irreducible process: the actuality of the arrow's potentiality to be at the target. The "motion" is the continuous whole, not the individual points through which the arrow passes. Just as a living animal is more than the sum of its non-living parts, a motion is more than the sum of its static positions. By defining change as a process rather than a series of states, Aristotle dissolves the paradox.
