Complete a Focused 20-Minute Maths Study Sprint

Welcome. This course starts by making your maths study time work before moving into squares, square roots, Pythagoras’ theorem, and the accessible-ramp problem. A short, protected study session is more useful than a long session spent wondering what to do, checking notifications, or restarting repeatedly.

Today’s target is practical: you will complete one 20-minute maths study sprint. By the end, you will have used a written goal, a timer, and a distraction plan—and you will have a real page of maths work to show for it.


Why a study sprint helps

“Study maths” is too vague. Your brain has no clear finish line, so it is easy to drift. A sprint gives the session three boundaries:

  1. One written goal — exactly what you will produce.
  2. A timer — when you are allowed to stop.
  3. A distraction plan — what happens before distractions get a chance to take over.

The point is not to focus perfectly for 20 minutes. Minds wander; that is normal. The point is to notice the wandering quickly and return to the next small step.

In “Identifying your goals,” read the goal questions. Notice that a goal needs to be small enough to fit the available time. Then read the “Creating a revision plan” section, from the planning advice. Finally, in “Dealing with distractions,” read the three focus actions. Focus on the practical changes you can make before a session starts.


Make the goal concrete

A good 20-minute goal has four parts:

The goal does not need to sound impressive. It needs to tell you what to do first and how you will know you have finished.

For this first sprint, use this goal. Copy it onto paper now, including the time you expect to finish:

By [finish time], I will calculate the squares from to by writing each as a multiplication. If I am unsure, I will write a question mark and continue.

A square is a number multiplied by itself. For example:

You are not expected to know every answer already. This is a useful starting point for the next module: the question marks will show exactly what needs practice.

The infographic highlights six supports for efficient study: organisation, avoiding procrastination, setting goals, health, breaks, and flexibility. For today’s sprint, the most important are a clear goal, a distraction-free setup, and a planned break afterward.

Build your anti-distraction shield

Distraction is easier to prevent than to fight halfway through a task. Before starting the timer, prepare your study space as if you are setting up equipment for a short experiment: only the items needed for this task should be within reach.

Use this quick plan. Write the choices that apply to you.

My 20-minute setup

  • Timer: I will use ____________________.
  • Phone plan: I will set the timer, then ____________________.
  • Desk plan: On my desk I will keep only ____________________.
  • People/noise plan: I will ____________________.
  • Thoughts that interrupt: I will write them on a small “later” list, then return to the next maths line.

For the phone plan, choose something physical and specific. For example:

  • Put it in another room after setting a timer.
  • Give it to an adult until the sprint ends.
  • If it must stay nearby as your timer, turn on Do Not Disturb, place it face down, and put it out of arm’s reach.

Also gather your paper and pencil now. Do not begin a sprint, then get up to search for supplies: each small interruption makes it harder to restart.

Watch the basic process to see the sequence: choose one task, set a timer, work until it ends, then take a break. Then watch the setup advice. Focus especially on preparing materials, silencing distractions, and using paper to park unrelated thoughts for later. The video uses 25 minutes as a common example. Your sprint is deliberately 20 minutes: a focused length that fits your current daily study plan.


Complete the 20-minute sprint

You are ready. Do the following now, rather than merely reading it.

  1. Put your written goal where you can see it.
  2. Carry out your distraction plan.
  3. Set a timer for 20:00.
  4. Start the timer.
  5. Work only on the squares task until it ends.

On your paper, set your work out like this:

Continue through . If an answer is difficult, write a beside it and move on. Getting stuck on one question for ten minutes would stop you from learning what you do and do not yet know.

While the timer runs, follow this return routine whenever you notice a distraction:

  • Notice it: “I am checking my phone / thinking about something else.”
  • Put the phone away or write the thought on the “later” list.
  • Look at your written goal.
  • Continue from the next unfinished line.

Keep the timer running. Returning to the task is the skill you are practising.

Check what you got from the session

When the timer rings, stop. Take a short break: stand up, get a drink, stretch, or look away from the page for a few minutes. A break is part of the plan, not a reward you have to earn through perfect concentration.

Then check your square answers:

Correct any errors in a different colour if possible. Put a star beside any square that surprised you or that you could not work out independently. Those starred facts are valuable: they give your next study session a clear starting point.

Finally, write a one-line record underneath your work:

Sprint result: I completed ______ out of 12 squares. My biggest distraction was ______. Next time I will ______.

This is not about judging yourself. It is evidence for improving the plan. For instance, if the phone interrupted you, the next plan should make the phone harder to reach—not rely on “trying harder.”
