Providing Concise Scientific Facts

Good to see you again. Last lesson built a fast planning habit: read the command word first, then use the marks and answer layout to judge how much to write. This lesson applies that habit to the shortest-answer commands: name, state, give, and identify.

These questions can look easy, but they are frequent sources of lost marks. The usual problem is not lack of knowledge: it is giving an answer that is too vague, giving the wrong type of answer, or adding an unnecessary explanation instead of the requested fact.


What the command words officially mean

Pearson treats give, state, and name as essentially the same family of command words: they ask you to recall one or more pieces of information. Identify is slightly different: it usually asks you to select the relevant piece of information from a diagram, table, graph, practical method, or written passage.

Read the official Pearson command-word taxonomy. It is useful because it gives the examiner’s intended meaning, rather than relying on guesses about what different verbs “sound like.”

In Appendix 4, “Command word taxonomy” (p. 83), begin at the sentence introducing the table. Read the Give, State and Name definition. Then read the “Identify” row immediately below it, focusing on the selection requirement. Notice that the difference is not about writing more or less: it is whether you are recalling a fact or selecting it from information supplied.

The practical rule is:

Do not try to invent separate rules such as “state means a sentence but name means one word.” Sometimes that will happen, but it is not the core distinction. The important thing is to provide the correct scientific information, in the quantity requested, with no unnecessary material.


Concise does not mean vague

For these command words, a short answer is usually best. But short must still be precise enough for an examiner to see exactly what you mean.

Consider this one-mark question:

State the function of red blood cells.

A strong answer is:

Transport oxygen.

That is brief, scientifically correct, and answers the exact question.

These answers are weaker:

  • “They help the blood.”
    Too vague: it does not state their function.

  • “They are red.”
    A fact, but not the requested function.

  • “They contain haemoglobin, which binds with oxygen and carries it around the body.”
    The first part may be relevant, but it is far more than the question asks for. It uses time and increases the chance of writing something inaccurate.

A concise answer is not necessarily a single word. If the fact needs a few words to be accurate, use them. For example:

State the purpose of a fuse in a plug.

It breaks the circuit if the current becomes too high.

That is still concise. It includes the condition needed to make the fact scientifically meaningful.


Match the scope of the question

Before answering, look for four boundaries in the wording. They tell you what counts as a relevant marking point.

  1. Quantity
    Look for words such as “one,” “two,” “each,” or “another.”

  2. Category
    Is the examiner asking for a product, an adaptation, a variable, a structure, a property, or a safety precaution?

  3. Context
    Is the answer about a particular experiment, diagram, organism, circuit, reaction, or data set?

  4. Form of response
    Are you recalling a fact, or selecting information from the material given?

For example:

Give two products of the complete combustion of methane.

The scope is very narrow:

  • Quantity: two
  • Category: products
  • Context: complete combustion of methane

A full-mark response is:

  1. carbon dioxide
  2. water

Do not write “energy” as one of the products. Energy is transferred in the reaction, but it is not a chemical product. Do not add incomplete-combustion products such as carbon monoxide or soot, because the question specifically says complete combustion.

The marks and wording work together. For a two-mark “give” question, aim for two different acceptable facts. Put each answer on a separate line if space allows; it makes your response easy to mark.


Name, state, and give: recall the fact, then stop

Here are three examples across the sciences.

Biology

Name the cell structure that contains genetic material in a plant cell.

Nucleus.

The question asks for a structure, so write the structure. Do not list several cell parts “just in case.”

Chemistry

State one property of graphite.

It conducts electricity.

“Graphite is useful” would not be precise enough. “It has layers” may be true, but would need further detail to count as a property in some contexts. “Conducts electricity” is direct and specific.

Physics

Give one unit for potential difference.

The scientific unit is the required answer. A definition of potential difference is irrelevant here.

A reliable habit is:

Answer the noun in the question.

If it asks for a unit, give a unit. If it asks for an adaptation, give an adaptation. If it asks for a gas, give a gas. If it asks for an observation, state what is seen or measured, not the scientific explanation.


Avoid turning a recall question into an explanation

You will study explain questions in detail later. For now, keep the distinction simple:

  • State / name / give: provide the fact.
  • Explain: provide the fact and the scientific reason or mechanism.

For example:

State one adaptation of a root hair cell for absorbing water.

A suitable answer:

It has a large surface area.

The following answer contains a correct first point but goes beyond the task:

It has a large surface area so it can absorb more water by osmosis.

Extra detail does not automatically lose marks, but it is usually unnecessary in a one-mark recall question. In a timed paper, the better habit is to write the exact fact and move on.

There is one important wording trap: “Give a reason” is not the same task as a plain “Give.” When the question says “give a reason,” you must state a reason for the situation given. For example:

Give one reason why a polystyrene cup reduces heat loss.

Polystyrene is a poor conductor of thermal energy.

That is a short causal reason. You do not yet need a long explanation, but you must answer why, not merely name the material.


Identify: use the information supplied

Identify often appears next to a graph, diagram, table, experimental method, or written stimulus. The examiner wants you to locate the key relevant detail, rather than write everything you know about the topic.

Imagine this cooling-results table:

Identify the anomalous temperature reading.

A suitable answer is:

at 6 minutes.

You are selecting the result that does not fit the overall cooling pattern. You do not need to explain why it is anomalous unless the next part asks you to do so.

Another common form is:

A student adds iodine solution to a food sample. The sample turns blue-black. Identify the substance present.

Starch.

The observation in the question tells you which food test to apply. Your scientific knowledge lets you interpret it, but your written answer should still be only the selected substance.

When you see identify, pause and ask:

  • What information has the question already supplied?
  • Which one detail matches the condition in the question?
  • Am I selecting an answer from the stimulus, rather than describing the whole stimulus?

This is particularly useful in Paper 2-style questions, where a long passage can make students overlook a direct one-mark selection question.


The “exactly enough” rule

For these command words, write exactly enough to earn the mark.

That means:

  • If the question asks for one, give one unambiguous answer.
  • If it asks for two, give two different answers.
  • If it asks for an item from a graph, diagram, or table, select that item clearly.
  • If a scientific term alone could be misunderstood, add the minimum qualifier needed.
  • Do not add a list of alternatives when one answer is requested. Contradictory extra answers can make marking less clear.

For example:

Name one greenhouse gas.

Good:

Carbon dioxide.

Less effective:

Carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour, nitrogen and oxygen.

The first three may include greenhouse gases, but the question asked for one. Nitrogen and oxygen are not greenhouse gases. An unnecessary list has turned a straightforward one-mark item into a risk.


A five-second routine in the exam

Use this routine for every short recall question:

  1. Read the command word.
    Is it recall, selection, or a reason?

  2. Circle the quantity word mentally.
    One, two, each, another, or a specific number.

  3. Find the target noun.
    What exactly must you name, state, give, or identify?

  4. Check the context.
    Is there a graph, method, diagram, or reaction condition that limits the answer?

  5. Write the fact and stop.
    Add only what is needed for precision.

This routine should become automatic through past-paper practice. It takes seconds, but it prevents easy losses.

  • K — knowledge gap: you did not know the fact.
  • Q — quantity error: you gave too few required answers.
  • S — scope error: your fact did not answer the exact category or context.
  • P — precision error: your answer was too vague or used inaccurate vocabulary.
  • O — over-answering: you added irrelevant or contradictory information.

This will show whether you need to revise the topic itself or simply improve your exam response.
