Planning Marking Points by Marks and Answer Space

Hello — this first module is about learning to read exam questions as instructions, rather than simply writing everything you know about a topic. This will make your past-paper practice much more useful: when you lose a mark, you will be able to tell whether it was a knowledge gap, a command-word mistake, or a failure to give enough distinct points.

This lesson focuses on two clues already printed on every question: the number of marks and the answer space. By the end, you should be able to make a quick plan for how many marking points to aim for and how much detail each point needs.


Marks are a planning clue, not just a score

The mark allocation in brackets, such as , , or , tells you the size of answer the examiner is expecting. It is your first warning not to under-answer a question.

A useful default rule is:

Aim to give at least as many distinct, relevant marking ideas as there are marks.

This is not a promise that one sentence always equals one mark. Some marks are given for a linked chain of reasoning, especially in an explain question, and calculations may award marks for method as well as the final answer. But the rule gives you a sensible target before you start writing.

The key word is distinct. Writing the same idea in different words does not create more marking points.

For instance, if a question asks why exercise increases breathing rate, these are not two independent points:

  • “The muscles need more oxygen.”
  • “More oxygen is needed by the muscles.”

They repeat the same idea. A developed answer would need further scientific content, such as increased respiration, increased carbon dioxide production, and the resulting need for faster gas exchange.

On p. 95, find the commentary below the examples of flower-pollination answers. Read the examiner advice. Notice the contrast between the concise full-mark answer and the answer that includes information not relevant to the question. Make a note of the central rule: marks suggest the number of creditworthy points you need; blank space does not have to be filled.

A good mental question before answering is:

“For these marks, what would an examiner be able to underline as separate creditworthy ideas?”

That question turns the mark scheme from something mysterious you see afterwards into something you can anticipate before writing.


The three clues: wording, marks, and layout

Do not interpret marks in isolation. Use three clues together, in this order:

  1. The exact instruction tells you what type of answer is needed.
  2. The mark allocation tells you the likely breadth or depth required.
  3. The answer layout may scaffold the number or format of answers.

The command word has priority. A two-mark state question usually needs two recalled facts. A two-mark explain question usually needs reasoning, not merely two unconnected facts. We will study those command-word differences in the next lessons.

The layout is most useful when the question explicitly asks for a number of things. Pearson often uses bold type, numbered lines, boxes, or separate blanks to stop candidates forgetting one of the required responses.

This Pearson Edexcel guide explains how question layout can act as a prompt. Although the examples are from GCSE Science papers, the reading is useful for recognising the same practical signals when you work through your International GCSE papers.

In the section “Question style” around pp. 12–13, read the discussion of scaffolding. Focus on the example where “two” is bold and the response area is numbered “1.” and “2.” Then read the short “Structured questions” example that begins with the apparatus-improvement question. Notice how bold wording and two numbered response lines both signal that two separate improvements are required. In your own 4SD0 papers, always follow the wording of the actual question first.

Example: a clearly scaffolded two-mark question

Imagine the question says:

Name two pieces of equipment needed to heat solid wax until it melts.

If there are lines labelled 1 and 2, the plan is simple:

  • Point 1: one suitable piece of equipment
  • Point 2: a different suitable piece of equipment

The response should be brief, because name requests facts, not explanations. You would not gain an extra mark by explaining how a Bunsen burner works if the question only asks you to name equipment.

The bold word two, the , and the numbered lines all agree. That is the easiest kind of planning signal.

Example: a three-mark explanation

Now consider a question about inhalation:

Explain how the diaphragm causes air to enter the lungs.

The word explain tells you that the points must connect. A quick three-slot plan might be:

  1. diaphragm contracts and flattens or moves down
  2. volume of the thorax increases
  3. pressure inside the thorax decreases, so air enters the lungs

This is not three random facts. It is one scientific mechanism with enough stages to meet the three-mark demand. The actual International GCSE examiner report praises answers that use this precise vocabulary, rather than vague phrases such as “the chest expands.”

Your plan does not have to appear neatly as three written sentences. It can be one clear, linked answer. What matters is that it contains enough separate scientific content.


How much should you write?

Many students try to solve a three- or four-mark question by writing more. That can work only if the extra writing contains new relevant science.

A better approach is to increase precision and development, not waffle.

Compare these answers to a hypothetical three-mark question asking about a change in an ecosystem.

Too vague

There will be less competition and the animals will be affected.

This gives the examiner very little to credit. It does not identify which organisms are competing, what resource is limited, or what population changes.

Planned and specific

The coyote population increases because there are fewer wolves. Coyotes eat more mice, so the mouse population decreases. Fewer mice means hawks have less food, so the hawk population may decrease.

This contains a sequence of distinct, named relationships. It is much easier for an examiner to award several marks because each statement adds something new.

When deciding the depth needed, use this guide:

The wording “could,” “may,” or “is likely to” is sometimes scientifically appropriate in prediction or suggestion questions. But uncertainty must not replace detail. “It may change because of many factors” is vague; “it may decrease because its food supply is reduced” is a specific, testable idea.


Answer space: a useful signal, not a target to fill

Answer lines are designed to make questions easier to read and to guide you through a response. They are not a requirement to use every line.

A three-mark answer may fit into two lines if it is precise. Equally, a two-mark explanation may need several lines if you write clearly and show the necessary connection between ideas.

Use the answer space in these ways:

  • Numbered lines or separate boxes: usually mean separate required answers. Give one answer in each place.
  • A short blank after a one-mark question: usually signals a short, direct answer.
  • Several full lines after a higher-mark question: signals that developed writing may be needed, but does not tell you to fill the page.
  • A calculation space: signals that you should show working. The number of marks may include method marks, not just the final number.
  • A diagram or table: tells you that the form of the answer matters. Put the requested information in the correct place.

Do not make answer-space mistakes such as these:

  • giving only one answer when the question says “state two
  • writing an explanation when the question only asks you to name something
  • filling spare lines with guesses that contradict a correct answer
  • assuming that four lines automatically require four sentences
  • leaving a higher-mark answer unplanned because “I know the topic”

A useful rule is:

Fill the marks with relevant ideas, not the lines with words.

Watch the marks clue. Listen for the distinction between a general statement that earns one point and a sufficiently specific answer for a three-mark question. Apply this whenever you review a mark scheme: identify exactly what made each additional mark available.


A fast planning routine for every written question

You do not need to spend a minute planning every two-mark question. The aim is a five- to fifteen-second check before writing.

Use this four-step routine:

  1. Read the instruction exactly.
    Underline or mentally note the command word and any quantity word: “two,” “one,” “each,” “compare,” “give a reason,” or “using the data.”

  2. Read the marks.
    Turn into a target of roughly three creditworthy ideas. For an explanation, think of stages in a mechanism; for a description, think of observable features or trends.

  3. Make a tiny point plan.
    In the margin, or in your head, write keywords only. For a three-mark explanation of breathing, that could be:
    contract/flat; volume up; pressure down.

  4. Write and audit.
    After writing, count your distinct ideas. Ask whether each one answers the precise question and whether you have accidentally repeated yourself.

For four-mark and five-mark questions, a margin plan is especially valuable. It prevents a common problem: writing two excellent points, then running out of ideas because the remaining marks were never planned for.

The “point ledger” method

For longer answers, create an internal ledger before you write:

The plan must match the question. A describe graph question should include data trends and values where appropriate; it does not automatically need a scientific cause. An explain rate question needs a mechanism. The marks tell you how much; the command word tells you what kind.

This is why two questions worth the same number of marks can require very different answers.


How to use this in your past-paper system

From now on, add one small stage before you answer any past-paper question:

  • Write the mark allocation beside your answer.
  • Before checking the mark scheme, label each part of your response , , , and so on.
  • When marking, match each label to a real mark-scheme point.
  • If you earned fewer marks than expected, classify the reason:
    • not enough points planned
    • correct number of points, but one was vague
    • wrong command-word approach
    • missing scientific vocabulary
    • knowledge gap

This will give your error log much more value than simply writing “got it wrong.” For example, if you repeatedly gain one mark on three-mark answers despite knowing the topic, your priority is likely planning enough precise points, not rereading the whole CGP chapter.
