Welcome back. In the previous lesson, you separated listed futures from spot forex, crypto spot, and crypto perpetuals: a listed future is a standardized, centrally cleared derivative with a defined contract month and settlement rule.
Now we turn that structural idea into the numbers printed in a futures contract specification. By the end of this lesson, you should be able to look at a specification for a contract such as the E-mini S&P 500 or WTI crude oil and identify:
- the quantity or multiplier represented by one contract;
- the smallest permitted price movement, called a tick;
- the cash value of that tick; and
- the expiry and last-trading information that matters for a swing trade.
This is a roughly 35–40 minute lesson. It focuses on interpreting the specification; the next lesson will use the same fields to calculate futures notional exposure systematically.
A contract specification turns price movement into money
A futures chart tells you that price moved. A contract specification tells you what that movement means financially.
Suppose an index future rises by 1 point. Is that a gain, a gain, or a gain per contract? The chart alone cannot answer. The answer depends on the contract’s multiplier or contract unit.
Likewise, two products may both move by “one tick,” yet that tick may be worth , , or . A tick is a unit of permitted price movement, not a universal unit of money.
For a standard outright futures position, four fields carry most of the practical information:

A useful mental distinction is:
- Tick size answers: “How far did the quoted price move?”
- Tick value answers: “What is that move worth in money for one contract?”
- Contract size explains why the cash amount has that value.
- Expiry information answers: “How long can I hold this particular contract, and what happens as it ends?”
Do not confuse the contract’s value with its margin requirement. Margin is collateral required to hold the position; contract size defines the scale of the position itself. A relatively small margin requirement does not make a full-sized contract economically small.
Contract size: quantity for commodities, multiplier for indices
Contract size is not expressed in one universal way.
For a commodity future, it often represents a physical quantity. A WTI crude-oil futures contract, for example, represents 1,000 barrels. The price is quoted in dollars per barrel, so a change in the per-barrel price applies across 1,000 barrels.
For an equity-index future, there is no warehouse quantity of “S&P 500 units.” Instead, the specification uses a multiplier. For the E-mini S&P 500 future, the contract unit is times the S&P 500 Index level. Each one-index-point move therefore changes the contract’s value by .
Micro contracts illustrate why the multiplier matters. CME Group’s Micro E-mini products are smaller versions of their E-mini counterparts, with different multipliers by index.

Read the introduction and the first “Example” section, concentrating on the multiplier comparison. Then read the second “Example,” from the sentence beginning “Similar to the E-mini” through the sentence on the other Micro contracts; focus on the tick example. Notice that the quoted index can be the same while the monetary result differs by contract size.
For the S&P 500 products:

The Micro contract is not a different view on the S&P 500. It is a smaller unit for expressing essentially the same market view. If the index rises by 10 points, one E-mini changes by , while one Micro E-mini changes by , before commissions and other costs.
This is why the product name alone is not sufficient. “S&P futures” could refer to a full-sized, E-mini, Micro E-mini, CFD, or another product entirely. Always identify the exact exchange-traded contract.
Tick size versus tick value
The core calculation behind a futures specification is simple:

Watch the WTI setup. Focus on the distinction between the per-barrel quote, the 1,000-barrel contract size, the one-cent tick, and the resulting $10 tick value. The final portion shows the general rule: dollar P/L equals tick value times the number of ticks moved.
Worked interpretation: WTI crude oil
Assume the specification states:
- Contract size: 1,000 barrels
- Price quotation: U.S. dollars per barrel
- Minimum price fluctuation: per barrel
The tick size is per barrel. One tick applies to all 1,000 barrels:
If the quoted crude-oil price rises from to , the move is per barrel. Since each tick is one cent, that is 40 ticks.
A long position gains from that move; a short position loses , excluding trading costs.
The critical habit is to work in the market’s natural units first:
- Find the price move.
- Convert it into ticks using the tick size.
- Multiply ticks by tick value.
- Multiply by the number of contracts, if holding more than one.
This approach works whether the market is quoted in index points, dollars per barrel, cents per pound, or another specified unit.
Reading a complete E-mini S&P 500 specification
The E-mini S&P 500 contract is a useful reference market because it is a highly liquid financial future and has a clean multiplier-and-tick structure.

In the main specification table, read the “Contract Unit,” “Price Quotation,” and “Minimum Price Fluctuation” rows. Use the core specification rows to locate them. For ordinary directional trading, focus on the Outright tick, rather than the separate values shown for specialized order types and calendar spreads. Then move to the table containing “Product Code,” “Listed Contracts,” and “Termination of Trading.” Read the listing and last-trading details. Distinguish the contract’s named month from its actual final trading time.
Here is how to interpret the important rows.
1. Contract unit
The specification states:
This means one index point is worth per E-mini contract. It does not mean that one contract costs , nor that the margin requirement is .
2. Minimum price fluctuation
The outright minimum fluctuation is 0.25 index points. That is the tick size.
Since the multiplier is per index point:
So one E-mini S&P 500 tick equals per contract.
It follows that:
- 1 tick = 0.25 index points =
- 4 ticks = 1 index point =
- 10 index points = 40 ticks =
The same index move on the Micro E-mini S&P 500 is one-tenth as large financially:

The market can display the same S&P 500 price in both contracts, but the multiplier determines the P/L.
3. Price quotation
The E-mini S&P 500 is quoted in U.S. dollars and cents per index point. This tells you that a displayed number such as 5,200.00 refers to index points, not a cash outlay.
The economic scale of a contract at a given index level comes from applying the multiplier to that quoted price. You will calculate that notional exposure directly in the next lesson.
Expiry: the contract month is not just a label
A listed futures position is always attached to a particular contract month. For the E-mini S&P 500, CME lists quarterly contracts for March, June, September, and December.
The specification also states that the product is financially settled and that trading terminates at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time on the third Friday of the contract month.
These are three different but connected ideas:

For a swing trader, expiry information changes the trade-planning question from “Is my directional view valid?” to “Can I express that view in this contract month without running into expiry or a roll decision?”
Suppose you expect an equity-index rally to unfold over three weeks. If the contract you hold reaches its final trading period during those three weeks, you need a plan. In practice, many traders close the position or move to a later-dated contract before that point. The mechanics and costs of rolling will be covered later; for now, identify expiry risk early enough that it does not become an execution surprise.
Two operational cautions matter:
- Do not assume all futures expire quarterly. Equity-index futures often do; energy, metals, agricultural, and rate products can have different listed-month cycles and last-trading rules.
- Do not rely solely on a continuous futures chart. A continuous chart can be useful for macro and technical analysis, but your order is placed in a specific tradeable contract month. Check the current specification and the exact contract selected in the platform.
A practical specification card for every futures idea
Before paper trading a major future, record the following in your spreadsheet or trade plan. This is not yet a complete risk calculation; it is the minimum instrument-identification step that makes later risk calculations reliable.

Use the official exchange specification for the exact contract, rather than copying values from a broker’s CFD, spread-bet product, or a different-sized futures contract. Those instruments can track the same underlying market while having different point values, financing rules, expiry conventions, and execution conditions.
A good pre-trade sentence might read:
“This is one Micro E-mini S&P 500 futures contract. Its 0.25-point tick is worth , it is cash settled, and I will not hold it into its final trading period.”
That sentence demonstrates that the chart, the contract scale, and the calendar have all been connected.
