Causally Generative Worlds vs. Backdrop Settings

Welcome. This course treats the Internet not as a stock “cyberspace” backdrop, but as a possible secondary world: a place with conditions that shape how beings live, what institutions exist, what people desire, and what conflicts become possible.

Module 1 begins with a foundational distinction. A setting can be vivid without doing any real narrative work. A causally generative world, by contrast, changes the available choices, pressures characters into trade-offs, and produces events that could not occur in quite the same way elsewhere. For your Digital World, this distinction is the safeguard against merely decorating ordinary fantasy or adventure with server towers, glowing code, and anthropomorphic routers.

The “Building Worlds” framework maps a fictional world as interconnected domains, from environment and governance to culture and body, across individual, family, community, city, and world scales. In this course, the key question will be whether connections among those domains actually generate consequences in the story.

A setting contains things; a world produces consequences

Consider two versions of a premise:

A traveler enters a dazzling city of data vaults to recover a lost message before it is destroyed.

This has a setting. We can picture towers, archives, couriers, gates, perhaps a neon-lit undercity. But so far, the story might function almost identically in a fantasy library, a Victorian capital, or a conventional space station. The digital imagery is interchangeable.

Now alter the premise:

A traveler enters a realm where recently accessed memories are copied into fast, unstable districts. A message scheduled for deletion survives in one of these districts, but the copy will be overwritten when enough new traffic arrives. Different communities recognize different versions of the message as authentic, and the traveler must decide which version to preserve.

Here, the world is beginning to generate story. A technical condition—temporary copies that favor speed over permanence—has consequences:

  1. Movement and urgency: the character has a time-limited route through a changing landscape.
  2. Social disagreement: different groups experience different versions of reality.
  3. Authority: someone must decide what counts as the “real” message.
  4. Character pressure: preserving one copy may mean allowing another to disappear.
  5. Theme: memory is not merely stored; it is contingent, unequal, and politically contested.

The point is not that a real cache literally contains citizens or that every technical behavior should receive a one-to-one fantasy equivalent. The point is that your fictional interpretation must be downstream from a real constraint, and its later consequences must remain consistent with that interpretation.

A useful definition is:

A fictional world is causally generative when its conditions systematically enable, constrain, and complicate the characters’ actions, producing conflicts and outcomes that would substantially change if those conditions changed.

The word systematically matters. One conveniently timed technical obstacle is not yet a world. A world has repeated pressures: rules affect institutions; institutions distribute power; power shapes values and habits; those habits create character conflicts.


World, character, and plot are one system

Fonda Lee’s formulation is especially useful here: world, character, and plot are not separate layers assembled after the fact. They are mutually supporting parts of a story. Read the selected transcript with that relationship in mind.

Read this Writing Excuses discussion with novelist Fonda Lee for a compact account of why worldbuilding must be connected to character choices and plot pressure, rather than treated as an invented “campus” surrounding a generic story.

Read the opening transcript passage, beginning with Fonda Lee’s discussion of enjoying worldbuilding. Focus on the world-character-plot relationship: a world needs a narrative reason to exist. Then find the later passage that begins, “Most of the time, we have some little kernel,” and read the world-kernel method. Notice the proposed question: what conflicts are inherent in the premise? Finally, read the following transcript passage beginning, “Cool. Well, there’s a thing that Fonda was talking about,” through its discussion of environment, culture, and technology. Study the interconnectedness argument. Look for causal relationships rather than a checklist of things to invent.

Lee’s “world kernel” gives you a productive starting point for this project. You need not begin by mapping every cable, platform, protocol, and hidden network. Begin with one proposition that has inherent tensions.

For example:

  • Identity can be duplicated, but rights cannot.
  • Movement is fast only for those who can pay for priority.
  • Every secure border requires an authority that decides who counts as legitimate.
  • A prediction about a person can alter the person it predicts.
  • Deletion is never fully reliable, but recovery is unequally distributed.

Each proposition is more than a visual motif. It implies people with conflicting interests.

If identities can be duplicated but rights cannot, who must prove they are the legally recognized version? Who profits by issuing recognition? Who is excluded? Can an unrecognized copy own property, form a family, testify, or claim that it has been harmed? Once these questions arise, the world is generating institutions, class divisions, and plots.


The backdrop test

A backdrop is not worthless. A story may use an evocative place mainly to create atmosphere, contrast, or symbolic resonance. But in your project, the Internet should be stronger than that: it should make its stories possible.

Use the following tests while evaluating an idea.

The relocation test is particularly sharp. Imagine moving your scene from a “Server Citadel” to a generic palace. If the guards, court politics, romance, chase, and final revelation remain unchanged, the citadel is likely decoration. If the plot depends on processing capacity, service obligations, uptime, replication, access permissions, and dependence on users elsewhere, it is becoming a world.

The traceback test works in the opposite direction. Start with a dramatic event and ask: Why could this happen here? Then continue asking why until you reach a world condition.

For instance:

  • A citizen loses their legal name.
  • This occurs because an authentication authority revoked their credential.
  • The authority can do this because identity is centrally administered.
  • Central administration arose because cross-network movement requires trusted verification.
  • That requirement creates a class of people who can grant, deny, sell, forge, or challenge recognition.

The immediate event is personal; the underlying cause is systemic. That is the scale-shifting power of worldbuilding.


Constraints are more generative than spectacle

Worldbuilding often begins with a possibility: What if a human could physically enter the Internet? That is an excellent premise, but possibility alone does not yet produce a story. Limits do.

Brandon Sanderson makes the comparable point about magic systems: when readers understand a capability’s boundaries and costs, that capability can create satisfying problems and solutions. Your Digital World’s technical principles should be treated similarly—not as exposition to display, but as constraints that make choices consequential.

Watch Brandon Sanderson’s “Worldbuilding Part Two” lecture for two linked principles: worldbuilding should support the story, and a few connected conditions can make a world feel much larger than a catalogue of unrelated inventions.

First watch worldbuilding’s purpose. Sanderson warns against treating the invented world as an end in itself; note the priority he gives to the relationship among world, character, and story. Then watch one condition’s consequences, his example of a core environmental feature influencing many other domains. As you watch, translate the lesson into your project: choose one Internet condition, then ask how it could influence travel, labor, law, architecture, religion, or class.

For the Digital World, constraints might include:

  • A traveler cannot enter a private network without an accepted identity.
  • A message may move quickly, but only in fragments and by routes no individual controls.
  • A copied person can survive deletion, but every copy can diverge through new experience.
  • A character can hide their content through encryption, but then cannot easily prove what it contains.
  • An AI agent can act across enormous distances, but depends on computation allocated by an owner or institution.

Notice that each constraint is double-sided. It grants an ability and produces a limitation, a price, or a vulnerability. This is why constraints generate more story than raw power.

“Encryption exists” is merely a fact.
“Encrypted speech protects dissidents, criminals, lovers, and exploitative institutions alike; no authority can inspect only the messages it dislikes” is a pressure that creates a society.

That society may develop rival political philosophies:

  • security through inspection;
  • liberty through privacy;
  • trust through reputation;
  • legitimacy through cryptographic proof;
  • safety through isolation.

The technology does not mechanically dictate one culture. Human and nonhuman groups still interpret, contest, misuse, regulate, and mythologize it. A causally generative world avoids both extremes:

  • Technological determinism: “This technical feature automatically creates exactly one kind of society.”
  • Decorative technology: “This technical feature looks exciting but changes nothing important.”

Instead, treat a technical reality as a condition that creates pressures. Societies respond to those pressures differently according to history, power, fear, and desire.


A compact diagnostic: “The City of Caches”

Let us make the distinction concrete without trying to design your whole world yet.

Decorative version

The protagonist enters the City of Caches, a glittering district filled with fleeting images and forgetful inhabitants. They seek an old memory while sinister guards pursue them.

This has mood and a usable metaphor. But the city’s technical basis has not caused the plot. The same scene could happen in an enchanted library of fading dreams.

Causally generative version

Assume the fictional world interprets cached data as temporary but locally accessible memory districts. Copies near frequently visited routes are easier and cheaper to reach than the authoritative source, but they can become stale or be overwritten.

Now let that condition affect the world:

Now the City of Caches cannot be replaced by a generic library without changing the problem. Its distinctive condition produces an ethical conflict: should reliability, speed, justice, personal memory, or collective access take priority?

This is the basic design habit to cultivate. Do not stop after inventing a striking physical representation. Ask what routines, hierarchies, laws, and moral disagreements would grow around it.


Build depth by following one pressure

Your project could easily become immense: servers, cables, clouds, platforms, databases, AI systems, bot networks, darknets, and digital doubles all invite invention. The risk is an “ocean an inch deep”: dozens of clever regions with no causal weight.

At this stage, prefer depth over inventory. Select a small number of core conditions and follow each one into several human consequences.

A practical drafting note can have five lines:

  1. Core condition: State the world’s relevant rule in plain language.
  2. Ordinary adaptation: Record one thing inhabitants do every day because of it.
  3. Institutional response: Name one organization, law, profession, or market that exists because of it.
  4. Unequal consequence: Identify who gains access, safety, wealth, or status, and who does not.
  5. Story pressure: State a decision that would become difficult because of this condition.

If the final line yields a genuine dilemma rather than a visual set piece, you likely have the beginning of a generative world element.
