Classifying Claims by Evidence Type

Hello, and welcome to the first lesson of The Digital World. This opening module establishes the research discipline that will keep the project both imaginative and rigorous. Before turning routers into crossroads, databases into archives, or Shadows into captured doubles, you need a dependable way to say what kind of claim you are making and what warrants it.

That is especially important for this project because it deliberately crosses technical systems, journalism, political critique, philosophy, fiction, and living religious traditions. These domains do not use evidence in exactly the same way. A packet being routed is not established by the same kinds of materials as a documented data-harvesting scandal; a philosophical argument about personhood is not a laboratory result; and a myth can have profound cultural significance without functioning as a technical explanation.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to assign a defensible status to a claim: established fact, documented event, academic theory, philosophical argument, hypothesis, speculation, conspiracy theory, or myth.


Why classification comes before worldbuilding

Consider these three statements:

  1. “Internet packets can be delayed, lost, duplicated, or reordered in transit.”
  2. “A particular platform secretly delayed one user’s messages to influence an election.”
  3. “In the Digital World, delayed packets are treated as travelers detained by an overburdened border authority.”

All three may appear in your story notebook, but they are doing different jobs.

  • The first is a technical factual claim about network behavior.
  • The second is a claim about a specific event, which needs documents, logs, testimony, or other evidence appropriate to the allegation.
  • The third is fictional invention: a metaphorical translation that can be artistically useful without being a claim about reality.

A common research failure is to slide silently between these levels. For example:

“Platforms profile users; therefore they already possess conscious digital souls.”

The first clause may describe documented data practices. The second is a philosophical and speculative leap. It may become a powerful premise for fiction, but it should not borrow the authority of the first clause.

Your aim is not to make every statement “factual.” It is to ensure that every statement carries an honest label.

A useful rule for the entire course is:

Evidence determines what you may assert about the world; imagination determines what you may build from it.


Begin with the scientific vocabulary

The everyday use of “theory” often means “an interesting guess.” In research, a theory and a hypothesis have different roles. The short video below establishes the basic scientific distinction.

Start with the vocabulary problem, which explains why everyday and scientific uses of these terms diverge. Then watch facts and hypotheses for the basic distinction between an observation and a proposed explanation. Continue with theories and worked examples. Focus on the idea that a scientific theory is not upgraded speculation: it is an explanatory framework that has survived substantial testing within a stated domain.

Scientific claims remain revisable. “Established” does not mean metaphysically certain forever; it means that the claim is currently well supported by converging evidence, testing, and competent scrutiny.

For this course, it will help to separate two questions:

A myth is not “bad evidence” in the same way a false technical claim is bad evidence. A myth may be the primary object of study when asking how a community imagines fate, doubling, power, or spiritual danger. But it is not automatically evidence that a supernatural event occurred.


The eight claim categories

The following table is your first version of a claim-classification key. Treat it as a practical instrument, not as a rigid hierarchy. Some claims contain more than one category and must be separated into parts.

A crucial distinction: fact versus event

An established fact often concerns a general mechanism. For example, network congestion can cause delay and packet loss.

A documented event concerns a particular occurrence. For example, a particular router at a particular time dropped packets, or a named company acquired a named dataset under specific conditions.

The evidence differs:

  • To establish packet loss as possible, you rely on networking knowledge, standards, experiments, and repeated observation.
  • To establish that this packet was lost in this system on this date, you need logs, packet traces, monitoring records, or credible testimony.

This distinction will protect the novel from a common weakness in technological fiction: using a real mechanism as if it proves a particular dramatic accusation.


Evidence is not a single ladder

A physics experiment, a server log, an archival letter, an ethnographic interview, and a philosophical text do not offer the same kind of evidence. They can all be valuable, but you must ask whether the evidence fits the claim.

Read this OpenStax introduction for a clear account of the relation among facts, theories, hypotheses, testing, and skepticism. Its scientific framework will be especially useful when the course reaches profiling, prediction, and AI agents.

Begin with the opening discussion of facts and opinions. Read facts and opinions and note that empirical facts depend on evidence rather than confidence or popularity. Then, in the subsection “The Process of Scientific Research,” read the research cycle. Focus on the difference between a general explanatory theory and a specific hypothesis designed to test part of it. Continue through the paragraph beginning “A scientific hypothesis is also falsifiable.” Read falsifiability. Finally, read the closing paragraph beginning “In the meantime, we should strive to think critically” for the source-checking questions to ask when a claim appears online.

Matching evidence to claims

Use these standards as a first pass:

  • Technical mechanisms need standards, technical documentation, repeatable demonstrations, measurements, or well-established instructional sources.
  • Historical and corporate events need contemporaneous documents, records, credible investigative journalism, court materials, audited reports, or multiple independent sources.
  • Academic theories need identifiable scholars, concepts, arguments, a defined scope, and engagement with evidence or criticism.
  • Philosophical arguments need clear definitions, explicit premises, logical validity, and attention to counterarguments.
  • Cultural narratives and religious traditions need contextual sources that identify a community, region, period, language where relevant, narrator or tradition bearer where possible, and scholarly interpretation. They should not be reduced to raw material for a generalized “African mythology.”
  • Speculative fiction needs internal coherence, thematic purpose, and clear separation from claims about the present world.

The IFLA checklist below is a useful reminder that source evaluation is an active process. Its advice to consider the source, author, date, supporting sources, and your own biases is particularly valuable when researching online claims about surveillance, bots, darknets, or AI.

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions infographic presents eight checks for online information: investigate the source and author, read beyond the headline, inspect supporting sources and dates, consider satire and personal bias, and consult experts. In this course, these checks help assess evidence, but they do not by themselves determine whether a claim is a fact, theory, myth, or philosophical argument.

The infographic is a starting checklist, not a substitute for judgment. A prestigious source can publish an opinion piece; a low-quality source can repeat a true fact; an official document can be authentic while still being self-serving. You will assess authority and evidentiary limits more closely in the next lesson.


Theory, hypothesis, and speculation: three forms of “maybe”

These categories are frequently confused because each can concern something not directly visible.

Academic theory

An academic theory is a structured attempt to explain a pattern. It should have:

  • defined concepts;
  • a stated scope and boundary conditions;
  • relationships among concepts;
  • evidence, argument, or both;
  • implications that can be examined, challenged, or refined.

In empirical fields, theories should connect to observations and generate testable implications. In social theory and philosophy, they may also function as interpretive frameworks. Either way, calling something a theory does not mean it is a neutral fact or universal law.

For example, a theory of surveillance may help explain why institutions collect behavioral data. It does not, by itself, prove that every individual data practice is harmful or that every platform has the same motive.

Hypothesis

A hypothesis is narrower. It is a claim designed to be tested under specified conditions.

Compare:

  • Theory-level framework: Predictive systems can shape behavior through feedback and optimization.
  • Hypothesis: If users are repeatedly shown emotionally arousing content, their measured engagement rate will increase relative to a comparable control condition.

The hypothesis names a relationship that could be tested and potentially found false. Its result may support, weaken, or complicate a broader theory.

Speculation

Speculation begins where evidence ends, or where the available evidence cannot yet settle the issue.

For this novel, speculation is not a failure. It is a central creative tool. The mistake is presenting it as a completed discovery.

For instance:

“Multiple data-derived models of one person could diverge after receiving different information and incentives.”

This is a plausible speculation grounded in familiar ideas about data differences, model updates, institutional objectives, and software versioning. It becomes a hypothesis only when you specify a system and a measurable prediction. It becomes fiction when you decide what that divergence means in lived experience.

A good story notebook does not erase the word speculation. It preserves it, because speculation marks the frontier where research can become invention.


Philosophy and myth are not failed science

Your project asks questions science alone cannot settle:

  • What makes one being the “same person” over time?
  • Can prediction become control?
  • Does a sufficiently capable Shadow have moral standing?
  • Is an inferred trait part of a person, property, or institutional judgment?

These are not merely missing-data problems. They are philosophical problems.

A philosophical argument does not become weak because it is not an experiment. It should instead be assessed by other standards:

  1. Are the terms defined clearly?
  2. Are the premises plausible or well defended?
  3. Does the conclusion follow from the premises?
  4. What assumptions does the argument rely upon?
  5. What serious counterargument could challenge it?

For example:

Premise: A being deserves moral consideration if it can experience suffering.
Premise: A Shadow that only imitates reports of suffering may not actually experience it.
Conclusion: Behavioral similarity alone may be insufficient for assigning a Shadow full moral status.

This is a philosophical argument. It may be careful or careless, persuasive or unpersuasive, but it is not an established fact simply because it is logically written.

Myth likewise has its own proper domain. A myth may organize a community’s understanding of birth, death, destiny, doubling, ancestors, danger, or the relation between visible and invisible worlds. Its importance does not depend on being laboratory-testable.

For the later Nigerian mythology module, maintain three separate claims:

This separation is respectful. It neither dismisses living traditions as “just superstition” nor treats them as evidence for claims they were never intended to establish.


Conspiracy theories: investigate claims without inheriting their structure

The Internet produces both real secrecy and extravagant stories about secrecy. Governments, companies, criminal groups, and political actors sometimes do coordinate covertly. Such coordination can later be established through documents, whistleblower evidence, court findings, leaks authenticated by reporting, or other evidence.

Therefore, do not use “conspiracy theory” as a shortcut for “uncomfortable allegation” or “something powerful people deny.”

Instead, look for warning signs:

  • The claim alleges coordination so vast that evidence should be abundant, yet provides little independently checkable proof.
  • It treats missing evidence as proof of a cover-up.
  • It makes itself immune to disconfirmation: any disagreement becomes evidence of complicity.
  • It relies on anonymous assertions, screenshots without provenance, or a chain of sources that merely repeat one another.
  • It substitutes motive for evidence: “They could benefit, therefore they did it.”
  • It offers one hidden cause for a complex phenomenon that has many observable causes.

Take the broadest versions of Dead Internet Theory. It is possible to study real phenomena that partly motivate it: bot accounts, automated content generation, engagement fraud, coordinated influence operations, and declining trust in online interaction. These are researchable technical and social matters.

But the stronger claim that nearly all online activity is secretly synthetic and centrally managed is a much larger allegation. Without evidence proportionate to its scale, it should be classified as an unsupported conspiracy theory or, at minimum, as internet folklore—not as an established description of the Internet.

For fiction, however, the claim can still be useful. Its status should be written honestly:

Real-world status: unsupported broad conspiracy claim.
Fictional use: a rumor told by human users who suspect they are outnumbered by artificial populations.
Story question: What evidence would actually distinguish paranoia from a genuine synthetic-population crisis?

That move preserves dramatic power while keeping your research standards intact.


A practical classification procedure

When you encounter a compelling claim, do not label it immediately. First rewrite it as one sentence that could, in principle, be examined.

Then use this seven-part procedure:

  1. State the claim precisely.
    Replace vague language such as “the Internet is fake” with a narrower statement: “Automated accounts generated a measurable share of replies under this hashtag during this period.”

  2. Identify its object.
    Is it about a general mechanism, a particular past event, an explanatory framework, a moral conclusion, a cultural narrative, or a proposed future?

  3. Identify the claim’s scope.
    Who, what system, where, and when does it concern? Broad claims require broader evidence.

  4. Ask what evidence would fit.
    A packet trace can support a networking claim; it cannot establish consciousness. A memoir can document someone’s experience; it cannot alone establish a population-wide pattern.

  5. Ask what could weaken the claim.
    A claim that nothing could count against is not a strong empirical hypothesis.

  6. Assign a primary classification.
    Use the category that describes what the sentence is doing now, not what you hope it will become.

  7. Record confidence separately.
    Mark it as high, moderate, limited, disputed, unknown, or fictional. Do not confuse a category with a confidence rating.

Your first research-notebook format

Use the following compact entry whenever an idea could affect the worldbuilding. This is not busywork: it is how the future Story Bible will remain auditable.

Claim card

Claim: Write one precise sentence.

Primary classification: Choose one of the eight categories.

Scope: State the people, system, location, period, or conditions involved.

Evidence needed: Name the kind of material that could support or challenge it.

Current confidence: High, moderate, limited, disputed, unknown, or fictional.

What would change my mind?: State a possible disconfirming observation, document, or argument.

Fictional translation: Describe the physical, social, or mythic form it could take in the Digital World.

Metaphor limit: State what the fictional translation must not imply about the real system.

Unresolved story question: Record the dramatic problem created by the claim.

Here is a model entry:

Claim: Network congestion can increase delay and cause packet loss.
Primary classification: Established fact.
Scope: Packet-switched networks under constrained capacity and competing traffic.
Evidence needed: Networking textbooks, standards, experiments, and packet-capture evidence.
Current confidence: High.
What would change my mind?: A correction would likely concern the mechanism or conditions, not the general possibility of congestion.
Fictional translation: A crowded transit district where travelers wait in queues; some are turned away when the holding areas are full.
Metaphor limit: Packets do not literally experience waiting, fear, or bureaucratic intention.
Unresolved story question: Who profits from keeping the transit district congested, and who is permitted to bypass the queues?

Notice the discipline: the metaphor becomes richer because its limits are explicit.
