Hello again. In the previous lesson, you learned to use an OS map key to identify symbols accurately, rather than guessing from colour or shape alone. Now you will take the next step: deciding whether the feature represented is physical or human.
This completes the Reading Ordnance Survey Maps module. By the end of the lesson, you should be able to use a symbol, its map context, and an explanation of its origin to classify mapped features confidently.
The central idea: where did the feature come from?
A physical feature is part of the natural environment. It has been made mainly by natural processes, such as flowing water, weathering, erosion, plant growth, or movements in the Earth.
A human feature has been made, built, planted, excavated, organised, or substantially changed by people.
The most useful question is therefore:
Is this mainly natural, or is it here because people created or deliberately changed it?
BBC Bitesize uses the same distinction: OS maps represent both physical and human features with symbols, and the key explains their meanings.

On the “How to read Ordnance Survey maps” page, find the subsection “Using a key.” Read the explanation of symbols. Focus on the distinction between a physical feature, described here as a natural landform, and a human feature. Remember that in school geography, “physical” is also commonly used for natural features such as rivers, woodland, and marshes.
A map symbol does not always look obviously natural or human. For example, both a river and a motorway may be blue lines on an OS map. Their colour is not enough to classify them. First identify the feature using the key; then decide whether people made it.
Classifying the symbols from last lesson
Here are the nine symbols you met previously, now organised by geographical type.

Notice that you need two parts in a strong answer:
- Name the feature accurately from the symbol or key.
- Explain why it is physical or human.
For example:
- “The winding blue line is a river. It is a physical feature because it is formed naturally by flowing water.”
- “The line with railway markings is a railway. It is a human feature because it was built for transport.”
That short explanation shows you are classifying rather than simply memorising a list.
Use map evidence, not just the symbol alone
A feature’s position and surroundings can help you check your answer. This is called using map evidence.
On this map extract, look for these clues:

Contour lines themselves are not objects on the ground: you cannot walk up to a “contour line.” They are a map method for showing the relief of the land. The relief they reveal — hills, slopes, valleys, and high ground — is physical geography.
The black line from A towards B has been added to the image as a pointer, so do not treat it as an OS map feature. Focus on the original symbols underneath and around it.
A dependable classification routine
When you need to classify a feature on an OS map, work through this routine:

Identify the symbol using the key.
Say exactly what it represents: for example, “quarry,” “river,” “woodland,” or “wind turbine.” -
Look around it for supporting map evidence.
A station should be on a railway; a bridge should cross a river; a settlement often has roads and building outlines nearby. -
Decide how the feature came to be there.
Natural processes suggest physical geography. Construction, extraction, farming, transport, and services suggest human geography. -
Give a reason in your answer.
Use the pattern:
“It is a physical/human feature because…”
This method protects you from a common mistake: classifying a feature just because of its colour. Blue often indicates water, but a motorway may also be blue. Brown contour lines show physical relief, while brown building outlines show human-made structures.
Some important “look carefully” examples
The trickiest symbols are often features that contain natural materials but have been changed by people.

The official OS Explorer map legend is useful because it places many of these symbols side by side. It distinguishes human-made structures such as quarries, electricity lines, wind turbines, and buildings from vegetation and natural-relief symbols such as marsh, cliffs, contours, and boulders.

Use this official Ordnance Survey Explorer-map legend as a visual reference. You do not need to memorise every symbol; focus on recognising which groups of symbols usually represent human infrastructure and which represent the natural environment.
In the “General Features” panel, scan the symbols for pits, quarries, power infrastructure, turbines, places of worship, and buildings. Read these human-feature examples and notice that each depends on construction, extraction, or a human purpose. Then move to the “Vegetation” and “Heights and Natural Features” panels. Compare the vegetation symbols with those for water, rock, cliffs, and contours. Read the contour note to reinforce that contour lines describe the natural height of the land.
Woodland: the useful Year 7 rule
Woodland can be slightly less clear-cut than a river or a railway. People may plant, manage, or cut down trees, but trees are living parts of the natural environment. Unless the map gives stronger evidence that it is a planned land use — for example, an orchard — classify woods as physical in most Year 7 map-skills questions.
The important thing is to follow the classification expected by the map evidence:
- Woods, marsh, river, cliff, moorland: normally physical.
- Orchard, farm, quarry, reservoir, campsite: human.
Writing map-skills answers clearly
When a question asks you to identify physical and human features, choose clear examples and support them with evidence.
A concise, high-quality answer could read:
“The River Noe is a physical feature because it is a natural watercourse. The contour lines around Offerton Moor show physical relief. Bamford railway station is a human feature because it was built for transport, and the roads around Hathersage are human features because people constructed them.”
This answer works because it:
- uses exact map evidence;
- gives both physical and human examples;
- explains each classification;
- does not assume that colour alone proves the answer.
A quick check before finishing is to ask: Have I named the feature, classified it, and explained why?
