Medical Terminology: Descriptive and Condition-Related Suffixes

Welcome back. Last lesson focused on prefixes: clues such as hyper- (high), hypo- (low), pre- (before), and intra- (within). Now you will complete the other end of the term. The suffix usually tells you what kind of word you are looking at: a description, symptom, blood-related condition, disease, enlargement, tumor, or fear.

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to recognize the required suffixes, translate terms such as hepatomegaly and neuropathy, and build established terms from a plain-language meaning. This is particularly useful for written definitions and multiple-choice questions: begin with the suffix, then work backward.


The suffix gives the term its clinical category

A medical term may include a prefix, one or more roots, and a suffix. Not every term contains every part, but a suffix is especially valuable because it often supplies the main category of meaning.

For example:

  • tonsill/itis
    tonsill = tonsil; -itis = inflammation
    Definition: inflammation of the tonsils.

  • hyper/glyc/emia
    hyper- = high; glyc = sugar or glucose; -emia = blood-related condition
    Definition: a condition of high glucose in the blood.

  • neur/o/pathy
    neur = nerve; -pathy = disease or abnormality
    Definition: disease or abnormality of nerves.

Use the same reliable sequence each time:

  1. Locate and define the suffix.
  2. Identify the root or roots: which body part, substance, or process is involved?
  3. Add the meaning of any prefix.
  4. Rebuild the definition in ordinary English, starting with the suffix.

A literal definition can sound slightly awkward at first. For example, intravenous can be built as “pertaining to within a vein,” but in normal clinical language we say within a vein. That is fine: first show that you understand the pieces, then phrase the definition naturally.

Start with the word structure, which reviews why the suffix gives a term its final category of meaning. Then watch symptoms and signs for -itis and -algia; descriptive conditions for -megaly; and general suffixes for -genic, -ism, -oma, -pathy, -osis, and -emia. Pause briefly whenever an example appears and name its suffix before listening to the explanation.


Three suffixes that make adjectives: -ac, -al, and -ous

The suffixes -ac, -al, and -ous all mean pertaining to or relating to. They usually turn a root into an adjective. These endings do not automatically mean disease or abnormality.

Notice what these terms do and do not tell you:

  • Cardiac describes something related to the heart, such as cardiac tissue or cardiac monitoring.
  • Neural describes something related to nerves.
  • Venous describes something related to veins, as opposed to arterial.

On a diagram-labeling or definition question, an adjective ending is a useful clue. If you see -al or -ous, begin your definition with “pertaining to...” Then add the root’s meaning.

The spelling of a term may look smoother than its word-part breakdown. For studying, cardi/ac clearly shows the heart root plus the “pertaining to” suffix, even though the completed word is written cardiac.


Suffixes for symptoms, inflammation, and blood conditions

The next group often appears in patient histories, laboratory results, and disease names. Do not treat them as interchangeable: each gives a different kind of information.

-algia: pain

-algia means pain.

  • my/algia: muscle pain
  • neur/algia: nerve pain
  • cephal/algia: head pain

If a term ends in -algia, start your definition with “pain of” or “pain involving.”

-itis: inflammation

-itis means inflammation.

  • tonsill/itis: inflammation of the tonsils
  • dermat/itis: inflammation of the skin
  • arthr/itis: inflammation of a joint

A key test distinction:

  • -algia tells you that there is pain.
  • -itis tells you that there is inflammation.

Inflammation may be painful, but the suffix -itis does not mean “pain,” and it does not automatically prove an infection is present.

-emia: a blood-related condition

-emia means a condition related to the blood. Often, the root tells you what substance or blood feature is involved.

  • hyper/glyc/emia: condition of high glucose in the blood
  • hypo/glyc/emia: condition of low glucose in the blood
  • an/emia: a blood condition involving low hemoglobin or too few red blood cells

The prefix is essential in terms such as hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. The suffix tells you the condition involves blood; hyper- or hypo- tells you whether the glucose level is high or low.


Suffixes for origin, state, disease, enlargement, and tumor

These suffixes describe broader clinical categories. Learn their central meaning first; then use the root and prefix to make the complete definition.

Distinctions worth memorizing

-genic versus -emia

These endings answer entirely different questions.

  • -genic asks, “What produced or caused this?”
    Cardiogenic means originating in or caused by the heart.

  • -emia asks, “What is happening in the blood?”
    Hyperglycemia means high glucose in the blood.

-ism, -osis, and -pathy

All three can appear in names of conditions, so use the most specific meaning available:

  • -ism: a state, condition, or process.
    Hyperthyroidism is a condition involving excessive thyroid activity.

  • -osis: an abnormal condition.
    Cyanosis is an abnormal bluish discoloration, often visible in skin or mucous membranes.

  • -pathy: disease or abnormality.
    Neuropathy is a disease or dysfunction affecting nerves.

For a basic terminology assessment, do not force a sharper distinction than the word parts support. The suffix gives the category; the rest of the term gives the specific subject.

-megaly versus -oma

These are especially easy to confuse because both can involve an enlarged-looking structure.

  • -megaly means enlargement of an organ or structure.
    Cardiomegaly means enlargement of the heart.

  • -oma means a tumor or mass.
    Melanoma is a tumor involving pigment-producing cells.

Neither suffix alone gives a complete clinical diagnosis. In particular, do not assume that every term ending in -oma tells you whether a tumor is benign or malignant. For word-part questions, the safe definition is tumor or mass.

In the alphabetical suffix list, read the entries from -ac through -phobia. Focus especially on the required suffixes, saying each meaning aloud before looking at its example. Then find the subsection “Examples of Common Suffixes in Medical Terms.” Read the examples and reminder, paying attention to how cardiomegaly and myalgia are translated into plain language.


Construct terms by choosing the suffix first

When you are given a definition and asked to construct a term, begin with the clinical category—not with the body part.

For example, suppose the intended meaning is “enlargement of the liver.”

  1. “Enlargement” identifies -megaly.
  2. “Liver” identifies the combining form hepat/o.
  3. The established term is hepatomegaly, analyzed as hepat/o/megaly.

The combining vowel rule from the earlier lesson still matters:

  • Retain a combining vowel when the suffix begins with a consonant:
    cardi/o/megaly, neur/o/pathy, arachn/o/phobia.

  • Usually drop the combining vowel when the suffix begins with a vowel:
    neur/algia, tonsill/itis, cyan/osis.

Do not invent a new term merely because its parts seem to fit. In healthcare, use established vocabulary. For this course, construction means recognizing the appropriate components in a familiar standard term and being able to explain why they fit.

A six-minute recall routine

Use this routine twice today and again tomorrow:

  1. Cover the meanings in the suffix table.
  2. Say the meaning of each suffix aloud: -algia, -itis, -emia, -genic, -ism, -megaly, -oma, -osis, -pathy, -phobia.
  3. Sort them mentally into groups:
    • Description: -ac, -al, -ous
    • Symptom or inflammatory finding: -algia, -itis
    • Blood or origin: -emia, -genic
    • Condition or disease: -ism, -osis, -pathy
    • Structural finding: -megaly, -oma
    • Fear: -phobia
  4. Read a mixed list of terms and name the suffix before defining the whole word.
  5. If you blank, review only that suffix and one example term, then return to the mixed list. This is stronger practice than rereading every table.
