One-Shot vs. Repeated Interactions: Reputation and Future Behavior

Welcome to the module on sustaining cooperation without becoming a pushover. In the previous parts of the course, learners identify strategic situations and recognize the cooperation trap in a Prisoner’s Dilemma. This module asks a practical follow-up: when does it make sense to cooperate, and when does that leave someone exposed?

This lesson compares the same dilemma under two different conditions: a one-shot interaction, where there is no meaningful future, and a repeated interaction, where today’s choice affects tomorrow’s relationship. You will also distinguish direct reciprocity (“you treated me fairly, so I will treat you fairly”) from reputation (“others saw how you behaved, so future partners adjust their choices”).


The same choice can be a different game

Consider two people who must independently decide whether to cooperate or defect. Cooperation might mean documenting work carefully, sharing credit, returning a favor, or contributing to a shared expense. Defection means taking an immediate private advantage while relying on the other person’s effort.

The Prisoner’s Dilemma makes the tension visible. Lower prison sentences are better in this version: if the other prisoner remains silent, confessing gives you the best individual outcome; if they confess, confessing still protects you from the worst outcome. Each person therefore has a reason to confess, even though both would prefer mutual silence.

A payoff matrix for the Prisoner’s Dilemma: prisoner A chooses rows and prisoner B chooses columns. If both confess, each receives five years, although both remaining silent would give each only one year; each nevertheless has an individual incentive to confess.

This is the logic of a one-shot game: once the choices are made, the relationship is strategically over. Your counterpart cannot reward cooperation later or respond to exploitation later. A promise of “I’ll remember this” has little force if you will never meet again, cannot identify each other, or have no ability to affect one another’s future outcomes.

A one-shot interaction is not necessarily a literal first meeting. It is one-shot whenever your action has no meaningful connection to future dealings. Examples include:

  • an anonymous online transaction with no review system;
  • a short-term encounter with someone you will not meet again;
  • a project handoff just before both parties leave an organization;
  • a negotiation where neither side can verify behavior or impose consequences afterward.

In such settings, trust may still arise from ethics, empathy, contracts, or institutional rules. But the strategic support for trust is weak because future consequences are missing.

The shadow of the future

Now keep the immediate choices the same but place them in a recurring relationship.

Imagine two neighboring teams that each maintain a shared internal tool. In every release cycle, a team can either:

  • contribute: spend effort on tests, documentation, and reliable handoffs; or
  • free ride: ship quickly while benefiting from the other team’s maintenance.

For a single release, free-riding can look tempting. The team saves effort today and still receives the benefit of the other team’s work. But if the same teams expect to work together next month, next quarter, and next year, today’s choice becomes a message about what tomorrow will be like.

A team that free-rides today may gain a short-term advantage, but it can trigger foreseeable responses:

  1. The other team observes the imbalance.
  2. It reduces its own cooperative effort, asks for formal ownership, or requires more costly review.
  3. Both teams lose the smooth collaboration that made the arrangement valuable.

The future casts a “shadow” over the current decision. Cooperation can now be self-interested in a longer sense: preserving a productive relationship may be worth more than extracting one immediate gain.

The comparison is not “selfish people defect, good people cooperate.” It is more useful to say that the incentive structure has changed.

The key word is possible, not guaranteed. Repetition creates an opportunity for cooperation; it does not create trust automatically.

4. Social interactions – The Economy 1.0 - CORE Econ

In the subsection “Repeated games,” read from the thought experiment beginning the seasonal comparison. Track Anil’s reasoning carefully: using the self-serving option brings a gain this season, but it changes Bala’s likely behavior next year. You can skip the multiple-choice question that follows.

The farmers’ case also clarifies a common misunderstanding. Cooperation in repeated settings is not maintained merely by warm feelings or a vague hope of getting along. It is maintained when each person sees a credible link between:

  • their behavior now,
  • the other person’s future response,
  • and the future value both could lose.

When repetition really changes behavior

A recurring task alone is not enough. If people interact repeatedly but cannot recognize one another, observe conduct, or respond to it, the situation may still function much like a one-shot game.

For future contact to support cooperation, look for four conditions.

1. The future is likely enough to matter

A relationship works differently when there is a realistic prospect of another interaction. A regular client relationship, a small team with an ongoing roadmap, or neighbors sharing a building all have a future that can matter.

By contrast, cooperation weakens if an endpoint is certain and close. Suppose two contractors know they have exactly one final handoff left. On that final handoff, there is no future relationship to protect. In highly simplified models, this reasoning can unravel cooperation even earlier: if everyone expects defection at the end, they may anticipate it one round before the end, and so on.

Real life is messier than that model: people have norms, care about identity, may meet again unexpectedly, and can carry a reputation elsewhere. Still, the practical lesson is sound: a relationship supports cooperation better when its continuation is uncertain or open-ended than when everyone knows exactly when it ends.

2. Behavior is observable

A future consequence only works if conduct can be seen accurately enough. If one colleague quietly resolves production incidents while another claims credit, the group may not be able to distinguish cooperation from free-riding. If information is noisy, retaliation can punish the wrong person and damage trust further.

Useful mechanisms are often simple:

  • visible ownership of commitments;
  • shared records of decisions and contributions;
  • timely feedback;
  • opportunities to clarify a misunderstanding before treating it as bad faith.

This is why transparency is not bureaucracy for its own sake. In a repeated relationship, it helps people coordinate their responses to what actually happened.

3. A response is feasible

The other person must be able to adjust their behavior later. That response does not have to be harsh punishment. It may be a proportionate boundary: less informal flexibility, a request for reciprocal effort, a change in how work is divided, or a decision not to extend special trust.

A threat that cannot be carried out does not deter exploitation. Conversely, an overreaction can make cooperation fragile: one small mistake may start a cycle in which both sides keep “getting even.”

4. The relationship creates genuine mutual value

Repeated interaction helps most when mutual cooperation is better for both sides than mutual defensiveness. If a manager and employee, supplier and buyer, or two teammates can both benefit from reliable collaboration, there is something worth preserving.

If the relationship is fundamentally exploitative, or one side has no meaningful choice or safety, “cooperate because you’ll meet again” is not good advice. Strategic thinking should not normalize tolerating abuse or unfairness.


Reputation: future consequences beyond the same partner

Repeated games are often described as “I will see you again.” Reputation expands the circle: “Other people may learn how I behave.”

A diagram of sequential Trust Game or Institution Game interactions in which an actor’s observed behavior is used to update that actor’s reputation for future choosers. It depicts how one interaction can shape later opportunities with other people.

There are two related mechanisms:

  • Direct reciprocity: the same person responds to your past behavior.
    Example: you reliably cover a teammate’s urgent tasks; they are more willing to help during your next crunch.

  • Indirect reciprocity, or reputation: future people respond to information about your past behavior.
    Example: a freelancer who communicates honestly about scope problems may receive future referrals because clients share that experience.

Reputation makes an apparently one-time encounter less one-time. A seller who will never see one buyer again may still care about ratings. A new hire may not work with the same stakeholder on every project, but people exchange observations about reliability, fairness, and follow-through.

However, reputation is only useful when the information is reasonably credible. A reputation system can fail when:

  • feedback is anonymous, distorted, or selectively shared;
  • people can easily change identities;
  • observers lack context;
  • a single error is treated as a permanent character verdict;
  • social stereotypes substitute for evidence of actual behavior.

So the strategic question is not simply, “Do I have a reputation?” Everyone does in some context. Ask instead: Who can observe this action, what will they infer, and will that information reliably influence future choices?


A practical prediction routine

Use this short routine before making a choice in a trust-sensitive situation.

  1. Name the immediate temptation.
    What do I gain today by withholding effort, exaggerating, taking credit, or avoiding my share?

  2. Map the future contact.
    Will the same person, team, or institution plausibly affect me again? Is the endpoint known?

  3. Check observability.
    Will the relevant people know what happened, and can they distinguish a mistake from intentional free-riding?

  4. Identify the likely response.
    What can the other side realistically do if cooperation is not reciprocated? What could I do?

  5. Include reputation.
    Who else may learn from this interaction, formally or informally? Is that information likely to be fair and accurate?

  6. Make a conditional prediction.
    Rather than saying “they are trustworthy,” make the assumptions explicit: “If they expect another project with us, see that we shared the workload, and value the relationship, they are more likely to reciprocate.”

This routine improves forecasting because it replaces personality guesses with features of the interaction. Someone can be cooperative in a stable, visible relationship and defensive in an anonymous, end-of-contract setting without being inconsistent.

In the opening “The Game of Trust,” make your own choices, then read the one round dilemma. Notice that cheating is favored whether the other player cooperates or cheats. Treat its result as an illustration of how shorter relationships can favor distrust, not as a universal rule about every real social setting.


A five-minute field note

Choose one low-stakes recurring interaction: a shared household task, collaboration with a colleague, a hobby group, or a regular service relationship. Write one sentence for each:

  • One-shot version: If this were our only interaction, what behavior would each person be tempted to choose?
  • Repeated version: What future benefit or loss could alter that choice?
  • Reputation channel: Who might observe the behavior, and how would they learn about it?
  • Weak link: Is the problem an uncertain future, poor visibility, an inability to respond, or little shared value?

The purpose is not to label someone “cooperative” or “selfish.” It is to see which features of the situation are encouraging trust and which are quietly rewarding short-term opportunism.
