Urbanisation: From Sprawl to Megaregions

Hello. This course begins with a central geography question: what happens when increasing numbers of people live in cities? In this first module, you will trace how urbanisation can change the size, shape, and connections of urban places—from a spreading suburb to a city of more than 10 million people, and eventually to linked city corridors.

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to explain—not just define—how urbanisation can lead to urban sprawl, megacities, and megaregions. These terms are related, but they describe different outcomes of city growth.


Urbanisation: the starting process

Urbanisation is the process in which cities grow and an increasing proportion of a population lives and works in urban areas. It may happen because people move from rural areas to cities, because a city’s population grows naturally, or because nearby settlements become incorporated into an expanding urban area.

Cities attract people for practical reasons: jobs, education, health care, transport, services, entertainment, and the chance to start businesses. Industrialisation has historically been a major driver because factories and related services concentrated work in cities. Today, finance, technology, government, tourism, and service industries can have a similar effect.

Begin with the opening definition, then read the first two main paragraphs, from the historical explanation. Focus on the connection between industrialisation, urban jobs, and movement into cities. Next, continue with the paragraph beginning the two major outcomes. Notice that urban sprawl involves lower-density outward growth, whereas a megacity is defined by its very large population. Finally, use the glossary definitions near the end to check the precise meanings of “megacity,” “urbanization,” and “urban sprawl.”

A useful causal explanation begins with urbanisation but does not stop there:

  1. People and businesses concentrate in urban areas.
  2. The city needs more housing, workplaces, transport, shops, and services.
  3. Growth can take different spatial forms: upward and denser, outward and more spread out, or outward until nearby cities become closely connected.

Urban sprawl: a city spreading outward

Urban sprawl is the outward expansion of a city into surrounding rural land, usually through low-density housing, roads, shopping areas, and business parks. A dense central city may still exist, but development extends farther and farther beyond it.

Imagine a growing city where housing near the centre is expensive or limited. New housing estates may be built on cheaper land at the edge of the city. If major roads, rail links, or highways allow residents to travel to work, people can live farther from the city centre while still using its jobs and services. Over time, farmland, bushland, or open space may be replaced by suburbs.

The important point is that sprawl is not merely a city becoming larger. It is a particular pattern of growth: dispersed development across a widening area.

Common characteristics include:

  • lower population density than the urban core;
  • homes, workplaces, and shops spread far apart;
  • increased dependence on roads and private vehicles;
  • conversion of agricultural land or natural land to urban uses;
  • longer distances between homes, jobs, schools, and services.

Watch urban sprawl for the central idea: roads and transport networks allow people and businesses to move beyond city limits, often onto former agricultural land. Then watch suburbs and exurbs to see how settlements can remain connected to a metropolitan centre even when they are farther away.

Urban sprawl can make housing more available and provide residents with more space. However, it also creates planning challenges. When development is spread out, governments may need to extend roads, public transport, water pipes, electricity, schools, and health services over a much larger area. Longer car trips can increase congestion, fuel use, and air pollution.

So, in an explanation, use careful language:

Urbanisation can lead to urban sprawl when a growing city expands beyond its original built-up area. Improved transport enables people to live farther from the city centre, causing low-density suburbs to replace rural or agricultural land.

The word can matters. Urbanisation does not have to cause sprawl. A city could instead grow more densely through apartment buildings, redevelopment, and strong public transport.


Megacities: urban population concentrated at a huge scale

A megacity is an urban or metropolitan area with more than 10 million people. Tokyo is a well-known example. Megacities develop when urbanisation continues for a long period and a city attracts or gains very large numbers of residents.

Population size is the defining feature. A megacity may have dense high-rise districts, sprawling suburbs, informal settlements, industrial areas, and satellite towns—all within one huge metropolitan system. In other words, a megacity can also experience urban sprawl. The terms are not opposites:

Why might a city become a megacity? The same forces that drive urbanisation can become especially powerful in major economic hubs:

  • many jobs and business opportunities draw migrants;
  • universities, hospitals, and government services attract residents;
  • transport and communication networks connect the city to national and global markets;
  • a large existing population supports more shops, services, and industries;
  • population growth within the city adds to migration.

A megacity’s scale can bring economic opportunities, but rapid growth can also place pressure on housing, water, energy, sanitation, transport, and waste systems. Those challenges will be examined more closely in the next module.


Megaregions: when separate cities become an urban system

A megaregion is larger than a megacity. It forms when several cities and metropolitan areas grow close together and become connected through transport, trade, commuting, communication, and shared economic activity. The cities remain distinct places with their own centres and identities, but they increasingly function as part of one wider urban system.

The term megalopolis is often used for a densely urbanised corridor made up of linked cities. For school responses, “megaregion” and “megalopolis” can usually be explained using the same central idea: multiple connected urban areas, not one single city.

A megaregion often forms through several overlapping changes:

  1. Cities expand as their populations and economies grow.
  2. Suburbs and smaller towns develop between major cities.
  3. Transport corridors, such as highways and rail lines, make travel, commuting, trade, and movement of goods easier.
  4. Businesses, workers, and services become economically connected across city boundaries.
  5. The built-up areas may begin to merge in places, creating a nearly continuous urban corridor.

The northeastern United States provides a clear example. Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. are separate cities, but they are linked by dense settlement, major transport routes, business connections, and frequent travel between them.

The lights on this image do not mean that every part of the corridor is equally dense or that the cities have become one municipality. Rather, they provide visual evidence of extensive urban development and close spatial connections.

In the “Modern growth” section, read from the explanation of megalopolises. Focus on the phrase “concentrations of urban centres”: a megaregion is made of multiple connected cities. Note the examples on the northeastern seaboard of the United States, southern California, Japan, Great Britain, and the Netherlands–central Belgium area.

Avoiding a common confusion

It is easy to confuse a megacity and a megaregion because both are very large urban places.

  • A megacity is one metropolitan area with a population exceeding 10 million.
  • A megaregion is a network or corridor containing several cities and metropolitan areas.

For example, Tokyo is commonly described as a megacity because of its enormous metropolitan population. The Boston-to-Washington corridor is a megaregion because it contains several major, interconnected cities.


Building a strong explanation

For a high-quality geography short answer, define the terms briefly, then show the causal links. Avoid writing three unrelated definitions.

A reliable structure is:

  1. State what urbanisation is.
  2. Explain that growing urban populations increase demand for housing, employment space, services, and transport.
  3. Explain outward low-density growth as urban sprawl.
  4. Explain sustained concentration of people and economic activity as a possible path to megacity status.
  5. Explain how growth and connections between neighbouring cities can produce a megaregion.

Here is a model response:

Urbanisation is the increasing concentration of people in cities. As cities grow, demand for housing and services increases. This can cause urban sprawl, where low-density suburbs and businesses spread onto land outside the city, often supported by roads and transport networks. Continued urbanisation may also produce a megacity, which is a metropolitan area with more than 10 million people, because large cities attract workers and businesses. When several nearby cities expand and become linked by transport, commuting, and economic activity, they can form a megaregion, such as the urban corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C.

Notice the linking phrases: “as cities grow,” “this can cause,” “continued urbanisation,” and “when several nearby cities…”. They show geographical reasoning rather than a list of facts.
