A flow can be perfectly logical and navigable, but still fail if it overwhelms the user with too many choices. This brings us to our learning outcome: to recognize signs of decision fatigue and choice overload in complex user flows.
We will explore the psychological principles behind why having "too much of a good thing" (choice) can be detrimental and learn to identify the specific design patterns that lead to this state of user paralysis.

The most famous demonstration of choice overload is the "jam study." It provides empirical evidence that reducing options can dramatically increase conversions.

The jam study, and a similar one mentioned in the article about 401(k) plans, clearly show that an abundance of choice can lead to analysis paralysis, where the user is so overwhelmed they make no decision at all. This is a critical failure in a user flow.

Now that we have the theoretical background, let's get practical. How do you, as a designer and analyst, spot these issues in an interface? They often appear as specific anti-patterns in the UI.
