Automating and Refining Memory Cues in Rekordbox

Introduction

In our last lesson, you mastered the critical skill of beat grid correction. You now have a robust workflow for ensuring every track in your library has a precise, reliable rhythmic foundation. This is the bedrock upon which all advanced mixing techniques are built.

Today, we build on that foundation by moving from rhythmic precision to musical structure. The learning outcome for this lesson is to: Use Phrase Analysis in Rekordbox to automatically set memory cues at key structural points, then refine them for performance.

Think of a beat grid as the timing for individual lines of code. Phrase Analysis is like understanding the functions, classes, and overall architecture of the program. It deconstructs a track into its musical sections: intros, breakdowns, drops, and outros. By visually mapping this structure with Memory Cues, you can anticipate changes, plan transitions with precision, and free up mental bandwidth to focus on creative mixing.

This lesson will show you how to leverage Rekordbox's analytical power to create a structural map for your tracks and then customize that map to make it a powerful tool for performance.

1. Understanding and Enabling Phrase Analysis

Before you can use this feature, you need to understand what it does and how to turn it on.

Phrase Analysis is a Rekordbox algorithm that scans a track and identifies its structure. It then labels these sections with categories.

The 'PHRASE EDIT Operation Guide' provides a concise explanation of what Phrase Analysis is and the different categories it uses. Understanding this vocabulary is the first step.

Read section 1.2, 'Phrase Analysis' (page 2). Familiarize yourself with the seven phrase types: Intro, Up, Down, Chorus, Bridge, Verse, and Outro. This is the language Rekordbox uses to describe a track's structure.

Now, let's configure Rekordbox to perform and display this analysis. This is a two-step process:

  1. Enable Phrase Analysis: You need to tell Rekordbox to include phrase detection when it analyzes new tracks.
  2. Enable Phrase Display: You need to tell Rekordbox to show you the results on the main waveform display.

The official Rekordbox manual specifies where these settings are located. We'll use it to configure the software correctly.

Navigate to Preferences > Analysis > Track Analysis > Track Analysis Setting and ensure Phrase is checked. This is described in the section on 'Track Analysis Setting'. Navigate to Preferences > View > Layout and ensure Phrase (Full Waveform) is checked. This is described in the section on 'Phrase (Full Waveform)'. Ticking this option also makes the PHRASE EDIT panel available, which we'll use later.

Once these settings are enabled, any new track you import will be analyzed for phrases. To apply this to existing tracks in your library, simply select them, right-click, and choose Analyze Track, making sure the "Phrase" box is checked in the pop-up dialog.

2. From Phrases to Cues: Memory vs. Hot Cues

With the track's structure visible on the waveform, the next step is to place markers at key points. Rekordbox offers two types of cues for this: Memory Cues and Hot Cues. For structural mapping, we are primarily interested in Memory Cues.

  • Hot Cues: These are performance-oriented and assigned to your controller's pads. Pressing a Hot Cue pad instantly jumps the track to that point. Think of them as function calls or shortcuts for live triggering and juggling.
  • Memory Cues: These are navigational markers. They act as visual bookmarks within the track. You can jump between them when the track is paused, but their main purpose is to provide a visual reference and to work with features like the beat countdown. They are the perfect tool for mapping out a song's structure.

3. The Art of Refinement: From Automatic to Actionable

Rekordbox's Phrase Analysis provides an excellent starting point, but like any automated process, it's not infallible and isn't optimized for your specific needs as a DJ. This is where you, the artist, come in. The process of refinement involves two stages: correcting the phrase data itself, and then setting your own strategic Memory Cues.

Stage 1: Refining the Phrase Analysis

Sometimes the algorithm misinterprets a section. A breakdown might be labeled as a "Verse," or a long build-up might be lumped into one giant "Up" phrase. You can manually edit these phrases for better clarity.

The 'PHRASE EDIT Operation Guide' also details how to use the editing tools. This is analogous to refactoring code for better readability and logic.

Review Section 2, 'Phrase Edit' (pages 3-7). You don't need to memorize every step, but understand the four main editing actions you can perform: Adjust positions and combine phrases: Drag the boundaries to fine-tune timing or merge sections. Cut a phrase: Split a long phrase into smaller, more logical chunks (e.g., splitting a 64-bar intro into two 32-bar sections). Change phrase type: Correct a mislabeled section. Clear phrases: Wipe the analysis to start from scratch if needed.

Stage 2: Setting Performance-Oriented Memory Cues

This is the most crucial step. A DJ rarely needs a cue on the drop; they need a cue before the drop to know when to start mixing. Your Memory Cues should serve as your personal roadmap for a transition.

A standard practice in DnB is to set cues 16 or 32 bars before a major structural change.

For a DnB track, if you want to mix out as the drop of the current track hits, you need a cue 16 bars earlier on the outgoing track to know when its final phrase begins. Similarly, you'd place a cue 16 bars before the drop on the incoming track to know where to start it.

To make these cues even more useful, use Rekordbox's color-coding feature. A common system:

  • Green: Good points to start mixing a track in.
  • Orange/Yellow: Warning cues for upcoming vocals or major changes.
  • Red: Mix-out points, or the start of the final phrase before the track ends.

Finally, you can make Rekordbox count down to your next Memory Cue, giving you a precise bar count for your transitions.

4. Practical Exercise

It's time to apply this workflow. Select two different DnB tracks from your library and follow these steps.

Track 1: A Standard Dancefloor/Liquid DnB Track

  1. Analyze: Make sure the track has been analyzed with Phrase Analysis enabled.
  2. Review: Look at the phrase blocks under the waveform. Do they accurately represent the intro, build-up, drop, breakdown, and outro?
  3. Refine (if needed): If a section is mislabeled (e.g., a drop is called a "Verse"), use the PHRASE EDIT panel to change its type.
  4. Set "Mix-In" Cue: Find the first main drop. Go back 16 bars from the start of that drop and set a Green Memory Cue. This is your primary mix-in point.
  5. Set "Mix-Out" Cue: Find the beginning of the main outro phrase. Set a Red Memory Cue here. This signals the start of the last section you can mix out of.

Track 2: A Complex or Unconventional DnB Track

  1. Analyze & Review: This track might have a less clear structure, and the Phrase Analysis might look messy.
  2. Refine Heavily:
    • Use the CUT tool in the PHRASE EDIT panel to divide long, ambiguous sections into standard 16 or 32-bar blocks. This imposes a clear, mixable structure onto the track.
    • Correct any obviously wrong phrase types.
  3. Set Strategic Cues:
    • Place a Green Memory Cue 16 bars before the first interesting percussive section starts.
    • Find a powerful 16-bar loop in the middle of the track. Set a Memory Cue at its start, then save it as a loop in that Memory Cue slot. You can also make this an Active Loop, which will engage automatically when the track reaches that point. The Crossfader video (6dbbd) demonstrates this from 05:31 to 07:11.

After preparing both tracks, enable the "Countdown to next memory cue" feature and play them. Watch how the display gives you a precise bar count to your markers, making it effortless to know when to act.
