As you just saw, an acorn isn't an oak tree, but it's not nothing either. It is potentially an oak tree. This capacity to become is a real feature of the acorn. Let's formalize these ideas.

Defining Dunamis and Energeia

The two key Greek terms Aristotle uses are:

  • Dunamis (δύναμις): often translated as potentiality, potency, or capacity. It is a thing's inherent power to be or to become something else.
  • Energeia (ἐνέργεια): translated as actuality or activity. It is the fulfillment or realization of a potentiality. Aristotle sometimes also uses the term entelecheia (ἐντελέχεια), which emphasizes the state of completion or being-at-an-end (telos).

Characteristically for Aristotle, he does not offer a single, concise definition of these terms. Instead, he believes we can grasp their meaning by analogy, looking at clear examples.

Potentiality and Actuality

Read the first two paragraphs of the section beginning 'Since what concerns the kind of potency that corresponds to motion has been discussed...'. This corresponds to Chapter 6 of Book IX. Focus on the series of pairs Aristotle uses to illustrate the relationship between actuality and potentiality.

As the text explains, Aristotle gives us a series of pairs where the first term is in a state of actuality and the second is in a state of potentiality:

  • The one who is building vs. the one who can build.
  • The one who is awake vs. the one who is asleep.
  • The one who is seeing vs. the one who has their eyes closed but possesses sight.
  • The finished product (e.g., a statue) vs. the raw material (e.g., a block of marble).

In each case, the potential is a real capacity that exists in the subject, and the actuality is the exercising or fulfillment of that capacity.

Linking Potentiality and Actuality to Matter and Form

This last example—raw material versus the finished product—provides a crucial link to another core Aristotelian doctrine you've encountered: hylomorphism, the idea that substances are a composite of matter (hulē) and form (morphē).

Aristotle maps the potentiality-actuality distinction directly onto the matter-form distinction:

  • Matter is associated with potentiality. The bronze of a statue is, in itself, potentially many things. It has the capacity to be a sphere, a tool, or a statue.
  • Form is associated with actuality. When the sculptor imposes the form of the statue onto the bronze, that potentiality is actualized. The bronze is now actually a statue.

This is how Aristotle solves the problem of the unity of a substance. A substance isn't just a heap of matter; it's matter that has been organized by a form. The form actualizes the potential of the matter.

A Systematic Look: The Priority of Actuality

Now that we have a grasp of the basic distinction, we can turn to a more systematic and rigorous analysis. Please read Section 12, 'Actuality and Potentiality.' As you read, focus on three key points: The distinction between a 'power' to produce change and a 'potentiality' to be in a more completed state. The most subtle and important doctrine you just read about is the priority of actuality. Let's briefly review the three ways actuality is prior:

  1. Priority in Definition (logos): We cannot define a potential without referring to its corresponding actuality. "Visibility" is the potential to be seen. "Buildability" is the potential to be built. The actuality is part of the very definition of the potential.

  2. Priority in Time: This seems counter-intuitive—doesn't the seed (potential) come before the tree (actual)? Yes, for an individual. But Aristotle points out that any given seed must have come from a pre-existing actual tree. An actual member of the species must exist to produce a potential one.

  3. Priority in Substance (ousia): This is the most crucial sense. The actuality is the end or purpose (telos) for which the potentiality exists. Animals don't have sight in order to have sight; they have the potential of sight in order to see (the activity). The form (actuality) is the goal toward which natural processes are directed. Therefore, it is metaphysically more fundamental.

Pure Actuality: The Unmoved Mover

If change is the movement from potentiality to actuality, and actuality is prior to potentiality, what happens if we follow this logic to its ultimate conclusion? Is there anything that is fully actual with no potentiality left to realize?

For Aristotle, the answer is yes. Such a being would be eternal, unchanging (since change requires unrealized potential), and perfect. It would be pure actuality. This is Aristotle's concept of God, the Unmoved Mover.
