So far, the argument has established that any change we see implies a chain of causes, where each step involves something actual actualizing a potential in something else. The next critical question is: what is the nature of this chain?

2. The Crucial Distinction: Linear vs. Hierarchical Series

This brings us back to the central theme of our previous lesson. Feser, following Aristotle and Aquinas, argues that it's essential to distinguish between two kinds of causal series.

  • Linear Series (per accidens): A sequence of causes stretching back in time. Al begets Bob, who later begets Chuck. Al can be long gone when Chuck is born. Feser, like Aquinas, concedes that such a series could, for the sake of philosophical argument, go back infinitely.
  • Hierarchical Series (per se): A series of causes that must exist simultaneously. A hand moves a stick that moves a stone. The stick's power to move the stone is entirely derived from the hand, right now. The hand is a primary mover relative to the stick, which is a purely instrumental mover.

3. The Logical Structure: The "Existential Turn"

Here is where Feser's argument takes its distinctively modern and metaphysical turn. The argument pivots from explaining the change of things to explaining the existence of things at any given moment.

"What makes the changing things in linear series (such as cats) exist at all right now (i.e., what keeps them in being)? ... His point is that the things all around us (at every level) are currently realizing their potential to exist. This "existential turn" reframes the entire problem. The continued existence of a cup of coffee, from moment to moment, is itself an ongoing actualization of a potential. The coffee's molecules have the potential to be a cup of coffee, or to disperse, or to be something else. That they remain as coffee requires a concurrent, sustaining actualizer. This establishes a hierarchical series of existence, right here and now.

Let's break down that logical structure:

  • Premises 1-5: These establish the basics. Change is real (1), it's the actualization of a potential (2), so actualization is real (3). Crucially, this requires an already-actual cause (4, the Principle of Causality), so any change has a cause (5). This is the groundwork.

  • Premises 6-8: This is the existential turn. A changing thing (substance S) must first exist (6). Feser's key move is in premise 7: The existence of S at any given moment...presupposes the concurrent actualization of S's potential for existence. This implies that S needs a concurrent actualizer A to exist at all (8). The argument is no longer about a thing changing from A to B, but about why the thing is at all, right now.

  • Premises 9-12: This section applies the logic of hierarchical series to the chain of existential actualizers. The actualizer A either has its existence from itself (it is "purely actual") or it also needs an actualizer (9). If it needs an actualizer, we have a regress (10). But this is a regress of concurrent, hierarchical actualizers, which cannot be infinite (11). Therefore, the chain must terminate in a purely actual actualizer (12).

  • Premises 13-14: The conclusion. The existence of any changing thing S presupposes a purely actual actualizer (13). Therefore, a purely actual actualizer exists (14).

4. The Terminus: A Purely Actual Actualizer

The argument concludes with the existence of something that can actualize everything else without itself needing to be actualized. It has no potentiality for existence that needs to be actualized. It is, in Feser's terms, an "unactualized actualizer," or in Aristotle's, an "unmoved mover." It is pure actuality (actus purus).

The argument does not claim this being is an exception to the rule "everything has a cause." Rather, it claims the rule is, more precisely, "what goes from potential to actual has a cause." A being of pure actuality has no potentiality and thus is not the kind of thing that could have a cause in the first place.
