Deconstructing the Hive: From Bottom to Top

1. Hive Stand (Optional)
While not technically part of the hive, virtually all beekeepers place their hives on a stand. This can be as simple as cinder blocks or a purpose-built wooden rack. 3. Hive Bodies (Boxes or "Supers")
These are the stackable boxes that form the main body of the hive. You'll hear them referred to by several names, but they serve two primary functions: housing the colony's brood (eggs, larvae, and pupae) and storing honey.
- Brood Box / Chamber: This is the colony's nursery and living quarters. It's typically the bottom-most box (or two boxes) where the queen lays her eggs. Beekeepers usually use Deep boxes for the brood chamber.
- Honey Super: These are boxes placed on top of the brood chamber for the bees to store surplus honey. Beekeepers generally use Medium or Shallow boxes for this, as a deep box full of honey can weigh over 70 pounds (32 kg) and is very difficult to lift.
The boxes come in three standard depths:
- Deep: ~9 ⅝ inches tall. Used for the brood chamber.
- Medium: ~6 ⅝ inches tall. The most common size for honey supers.
- Shallow: ~5 ⅝ inches tall. Also used for honey supers, but less common than mediums.
4. Frames and Foundation
Inside each hive body are the frames. These are the removable structures that bees build their wax comb on. This is where the queen lays eggs and where bees store pollen and honey.
- Frames: Wooden or plastic rectangles that hang vertically inside the hive bodies. Their size corresponds to the box they go in (deep, medium, or shallow).
- Foundation: A thin sheet of plastic or beeswax imprinted with a honeycomb pattern, which is fitted inside the frame. It gives the bees a guide, encouraging them to build straight, even combs that are easy to inspect. Using foundation is optional (a practice called "foundationless" beekeeping), but highly recommended for beginners to avoid a mess of cross-comb.

5. Inner Cover
The inner cover is a flat board that sits directly on top of the uppermost hive box. It has two main jobs:
- It creates a dead air space between the top box and the main lid, which provides insulation from heat and cold.
- Crucially, it prevents the bees from gluing the top cover directly to the frames with propolis, which would make opening the hive nearly impossible.
Many inner covers have a notch for ventilation and a hole in the center, which can be used for feeding the bees with a jar feeder.
6. Top Cover (Lid)
This is the hive's roof. Its job is to protect the colony from rain, sun, and other elements.
- Telescoping Cover: The most common type for hobbyists. It has sides that overhang the top box, like the lid of a shoebox, offering excellent weather protection. It is always used with an inner cover.
- Migratory Lid: A simpler, flat lid that sits flush with the hive's sides. It's favored by commercial beekeepers because it allows hives to be stacked tightly together on pallets for transport ("migration").

- Queen Excluder: A flat grid of wires or plastic that is placed between the brood box and the honey supers. The slots are large enough for worker bees to pass through, but too small for the larger queen and drones. This "excludes" the queen from the honey supers, ensuring they contain only honey and no brood.
- Entrance Reducer: A small block of wood with different-sized notches that fits in the hive entrance on the bottom board. It's used to reduce the entrance size for new or weak colonies, making it easier for them to defend against robbing bees and helping them control the hive's internal temperature.

Finally, it's important to know that Langstroth equipment comes in two standard widths: 10-frame (the original standard) and 8-frame.
- 10-Frame: Offers more space for brood and honey. The boxes are wider and heavier when full.
- 8-Frame: The boxes are narrower, lighter, and easier to handle. This is a popular choice for backyard beekeepers.
The bees will thrive in either system. The most important thing is to choose one size and stick with it, as the components (boxes, covers, bottom boards) of the two systems are not interchangeable. This is a key decision when starting, as it dictates all future equipment purchases.
