3. The Enemy: Digital Clipping

Here is the process adapted for your setup. Follow these steps carefully:
Step 1: Initialize Your Mixer (Approx. 5 minutes)
- Turn all Trim/Gain knobs to the 12 o'clock position (which is usually 0 dB).
- Set all EQ knobs (Hi, Mid, Low) to the 12 o'clock position.
- Pull both Channel Faders all the way down.
- Turn the Master Level knob all the way down.
- Make sure the crossfader is in the middle or disabled.
Step 2: Set the Gain for Your First Track (Approx. 10 minutes)
- Load the first track of your planned mini-mix onto Deck 1.
- Find the loudest part of the track (usually the first drop). You can see this on the CDJ's waveform display. Set a temporary cue point there.
- Push the Channel 1 Fader all the way to the top (maximum).
- Press play on Deck 1. You won't hear anything yet, but you will see the signal on the Channel 1 LED meter.
- Now, adjust the Trim knob for Channel 1. Your goal is to have the meter's peaks hit the first orange LED, around the 0 dB mark. It should never hit the red.
- Once set, bring the Channel 1 Fader back down. You have now correctly staged this channel.
Step 3: Set Your Master Output Level (Approx. 5 minutes)
- Push the Channel 1 Fader back to the top.
- Now, slowly turn up the Master Level knob. Watch the main stereo LED meter on the right side of the mixer.
- Adjust the Master Level so that its peaks are also hitting around 0 dB. It's good practice to keep the master level slightly lower than the channel level to leave "headroom," preventing unexpected clipping if you mix two tracks together. A master peak of -3 dB to 0 dB is a safe target for recording.
- This Master Level knob should now be left alone for the rest of your mix. This is your final output volume. All volume adjustments during the mix should be done with the channel faders and EQs.
Step 4: Match the Gain for Your Next Track (Approx. 5 minutes)
- Load the second track of your mix onto Deck 2.
- Use your headphones to cue Deck 2.
- Find the loudest part of Track 2 and play it (you will only hear it in your headphones).
- With the Channel 2 fader down, look at the Channel 2 LED meter. Adjust the Trim knob for Channel 2 until its meter is peaking at the same level as Channel 1 (first orange LED, ~0 dB).
- You have now "gain-matched" your first two tracks. Track 2 is ready to be mixed in at the correct level. You would repeat this process for every track you introduce.
