Distinguishing Chinese Sibilant and Retroflex Sounds

Hello. In the previous lesson, you practised j, q, x with the tongue tip kept low behind the lower teeth. This lesson introduces a new contrast that is central to clear Mandarin pronunciation: some sounds are made with the tongue flat and forward near the upper teeth, while others are made with the tongue tip curled slightly back toward the hard palate.

You will learn to produce and hear the difference between z, c, s and zh, ch, sh, r. Continue using a relaxed, level pitch; tones will be the focus of the next module. For now, aim for a consistent mouth position, a controlled amount of air, and a clearly different tongue shape for each group.


Two sound families: flat tongue and curled tongue

Although zh, ch, and sh use two letters in pinyin, each is one initial consonant. Do not read them as separate sounds such as “z plus h.”

The seven initials fall into two physical families:

The word retroflex simply means “bent back.” Do not exaggerate the curl. A small upward-and-backward movement of the tongue tip is enough. What matters is that it is clearly different from the flat, forward position for z, c, s.

Watch and imitate the two groups once before breaking them down. The instructor’s visual comparison is particularly useful here; focus on tongue position rather than trying to copy the tones of the examples.

Start with z c s. Notice that the tongue stays forward, close to the backs of the upper front teeth; listen for the stronger burst in c. Then watch zh ch sh r. Watch the tongue tip curl toward the roof of the mouth, and listen for the added vocal vibration in r.


z, c, s: keep the tongue forward

Begin with the tongue tip close to the back of your upper front teeth. It may touch lightly, but do not curl it up toward the roof of the mouth. This is a forward, compact position.

s: continuous air

Start with s, because it establishes the forward tongue position without a stop.

  1. Put the tongue tip near the backs of the upper teeth.
  2. Leave a narrow gap rather than sealing it.
  3. Let air flow continuously through that gap.

The result is similar to an ordinary English s, but keep your attention on the tongue being forward and relatively flat. Try:

sa, se, su

For s, there is no silent closure before the sound. You hear friction immediately.

z: a brief stop, then a small release

Pinyin z is not the voiced English sound in zoo. Mandarin z is usually voiceless and is closer to a compact “ts” sound.

  1. Begin in the same forward tongue position as s.
  2. Briefly seal the airflow with the tongue near the upper teeth.
  3. Release into a short hissing sound, with little extra breath.

Try:

za, ze, zu

The sound starts with a quick closure, unlike s. Compare:

  • sa: continuous hiss from the start
  • za: brief stop, then a compact hiss

c: the same as z, but aspirated

Pinyin c uses the same tongue placement and closure as z. The difference is the same aspiration contrast you have already practised with b/p, d/t, g/k, and j/q:

  • z has little air after its release.
  • c has a noticeably stronger puff of air after its release.

Try za, ca while holding your open palm a short distance in front of your mouth. The release after ca should produce more air movement.

Practise this set slowly:

za, ca, sa
ze, ce, se
zu, cu, su

Keep the final unchanged within each row. Your job is to change only the initial:

zh, ch, sh, r: curl the tongue tip gently back

Now reset your tongue. Instead of aiming its tip at the back of the upper teeth, curl the tip slightly upward and backward, toward the front part of the hard palate.

Your tongue should not be tightly rolled, and you should not force it into the deepest part of the mouth. Think of the tongue tip as hovering or approaching the roof of the mouth. This gives the sounds a darker, more hollow quality than z, c, s.

zh: a curled-tongue stop with little air

Pinyin zh is one sound. It begins with a brief closure, then releases into a short retroflex hiss. Like z, it is produced with relatively little extra air.

Try:

zha, zhe, zhu

A useful comparison is za versus zha:

  • In za, the tongue is forward at the upper teeth.
  • In zha, the tongue tip is curled upward and back.

Do not try to make zh into ordinary English j. The Mandarin sound is generally voiceless and has a more noticeably curled tongue posture.

ch: the same tongue posture, stronger air

Pinyin ch has the same curled-tongue starting position as zh, but it releases with a strong puff of air.

Try:

zha, cha
zhe, che
zhu, chu

Use your palm or a tissue again. You should feel more air after cha than after zha.

sh: continuous retroflex friction

For sh, maintain the curled tongue posture, but do not fully stop the air. Leave a narrow channel and let air pass continuously.

Try:

sha, she, shu

English sh is a reasonable first approximation, but Mandarin sh should still have the tongue tip curled a little farther back than it normally would for English sh.

Compare:

  • sa: tongue forward; sharper, thinner hiss
  • sha: tongue curled back; deeper, more hollow hiss

r: a voiced retroflex sound

Mandarin r uses a tongue posture related to sh, but it includes vocal-cord vibration. It is not an English r, and it is not a rolled Spanish-style r.

To form it:

  1. Set up the gentle curled-tongue posture used for sh.
  2. Let air pass through a narrow space.
  3. Turn on your voice from the beginning.

Try re a few times. Lightly touch your fingers to your throat: you should feel vibration during the initial part of the sound. You should not feel that same initial vibration for sh, zh, or ch.

Read the short explanation in Huiqiang Zheng’s Mastering Mandarin Sounds to consolidate the forward dental and curled retroflex placements. It is most useful as a terminology check after the video and mouth-position practice.

In Chapter 3, under “Lesson 3 Initial Consonants,” first read the three short paragraphs on z, c, and s, from the dental descriptions. Focus on the difference between an initial closure for z and c and continuous airflow for s. Then read from the retroflex descriptions through r. Notice that ch is the strong-air partner of zh, while r is distinguished by vocal-cord vibration.


Hear the system, not seven unrelated sounds

The initials become easier when you organize them by two questions:

  1. Where is the tongue tip?
    Is it forward near the upper teeth, or curled back toward the hard palate?

  2. What happens to the air?
    Is there a brief closure? Is the release strongly aspirated? Does the air flow continuously? Is the voice switched on?

This produces several valuable contrast pairs:

A spelling detail: zi, ci, si versus zhi, chi, shi, ri

You have already learned the ordinary pinyin final i. After these initials, however, written i does not sound like the clear ee vowel in mi or xi.

In zi, ci, si, keep the tongue forward. In zhi, chi, shi, ri, keep the tongue curled back. The sound following the initial is short and shaped by that tongue position. For now, do not force a separate ee after the consonant.

Practise each as one compact syllable:

zi, ci, si
zhi, chi, shi, ri

The spelling is similar, but the tongue posture must remain different throughout each syllable.


A 15-minute pronunciation circuit

Work through this routine at a measured pace. It is more valuable to produce ten careful repetitions than fifty rushed ones.

1. Silent tongue reset — 2 minutes

Alternate without speaking:

  • Tongue forward near the backs of the upper teeth for z, c, s
  • Tongue tip gently curled back toward the hard palate for zh, ch, sh, r

Use a mirror if helpful. The key error to avoid is using the curled position for every sound.

2. Build the forward group — 3 minutes

Repeat each row four times:

za, ca, sa
ze, ce, se
zu, cu, su

For each c, feel a clear burst of air. For s, make sure there is no stop before the friction.

3. Build the curled group — 3 minutes

Repeat each row four times:

zha, cha, sha
zhe, che, she
zhu, chu, shu

Keep the tongue tip gently curled from the start. Do not allow it to slide forward to the upper teeth.

4. Alternate the two tongue positions — 4 minutes

Say these pairs slowly, leaving a short pause between syllables:

za, zha
ca, cha
sa, sha
zi, zhi
ci, chi
si, shi

Do not try to increase speed until you can feel the tongue reset clearly between the two sounds.

5. Add the voiced r — 3 minutes

Say:

sha, re, sha, re
shi, ri, shi, ri
zha, cha, sha, re

For re and ri, check for throat vibration. Keep the tongue curled, but do not turn the sound into an English r.

Record one final pass:

za, ca, sa, zha, cha, sha, re

When you listen back, evaluate only these three features:

  • c and ch have more air than z and zh.
  • z, c, s sound forward and sharper than zh, ch, sh.
  • r has audible voice and is neither an English r nor a rolled r.
